Greek police officer here — we built a free app to help tourists avoid taxi scams

I work as a police officer in Greece and every summer I see the same situation over and over again.

Tourists arrive at the airport or the port tired after traveling, carrying luggage, trying to get to their hotel — and some taxi drivers take advantage of that.

I’ve personally seen people charged €80 or €100 for rides that should cost €20-25.
Most tourists don’t know the normal prices, they don’t know the area, and many don’t want to argue in another country on the first day of their vacation.

Usually by the time they understand what happened, the driver is already gone and there’s not much anybody can do.

After seeing this for years, me and a few friends decided to build something simple that could actually help people.

So we created FairTaxi.

It’s a free app for tourists visiting Greece that helps estimate what a taxi ride should normally cost.

The app currently:

  • Estimates taxi fares in Greece
  • Shows your route during the ride
  • Works offline
  • Stores ride history
  • Lets you export rides as PDF
  • Supports multiple languages
  • Helps travelers avoid obvious overcharging

That’s it.
No ads.
No subscriptions.
No company behind it.

Just a small project made by people who were tired of seeing visitors get ripped off.

Right now the app only works in Greece, but hopefully we can improve and expand it over time.

If you’re traveling to Greece this summer, maybe it helps you or somebody you know.
