Chetan Anand - One of the Forgotten Visionaries and Pioneers of Bollywood

Chetan Anand may not be as famous a name as his two younger siblings Dev and Goldie or his world famous nephew Shekhar Kapur but his contributions to Indian Cinema far surpasses what even some of the biggest Icons of Bollywood achieved over their lifetimes. Here is a short list of some of the exceptional achievements from this auteur of Indian Cinema who cannot and should not be forgotten from the annals of our golden era:

  • Neecha Nagar (1946) - Introduced Indian movies to the world by becoming the first Indian movie to get released outside India. The First and only Indian movie to win the Grand Prix (Palme d'Or) at the Cannes Film Festival. Introduced a young sitar player named Pandit Ravi Shankar to the world with his first composition in movies. Also introduced a young actress named Kamini Kaushal who went onto win Best Actress for another Cannes Film Festival nominated movie Biraj Bahu.
  • He co-founded and launched his younger brother Dev Anand's Iconic Navketan Studios in 1950 by directing its first movie Afsar starring Dev Anand and Suraiya.
  • Aandhiyan (1952) - He brought in Sarod Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Bansuri Maestro Pannalal Ghosh along with a 17 year old Future Nataraj Gopi Kishan compose the music and choreograph the dances for the movie.
  • Haqeeqat (1964) - Not only is it considered one of the first (anti) war movies made in India but one of the most realistic ones and the first one made on the Indo-China war. It is the first movie to shoot on location in Ladakh. The movie had a stellar star cast including Dharmendra, Balraj Sahni, Jayant and an upcoming actor - director named Sanjay Khan. As a result of the filming schedule of Haqeeqat, Chetan asked his younger brother Goldie to make the Hindi version of the Iconic Guide for Dev in his place. The movie also featured Debutant Priya Rajvansh and Shabana Azmi's mother Shaukat Azmi. The music composed by Madan Mohan and songs penned by Kaifi Azmi were among the most iconic of the era including the classic Ab Tumhare Hawaale Watan Saathiyon.
  • Aakhri Khat (1966) - First Indian movie to use a handheld camera. The movie is one of the most unique cinematic experiences in the world as it follows a 15 month old child lost on the streets of Bombay. It is also the debut film of Bollywood's First Superstar Rajesh Khanna.
  • Heer Ranjha (1970) - It is the first film that experimented with all its dialogues delivered in verse.
  • Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973) - First Indian movie to focus on Indian Air Force and show aerial dog fights. The movie features Amjad Khan in his first adult role, 2 years before he catapulted into the limelight as Gabbar Singh in Sholay. It also features another young actor named Amrish Puri, 2 years before he tasted success with Nishant and 11 years before Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 14 years before he played the iconic Mogambo in Mr India
  • Paramveer Chakra (1988) - First TV Serial to bring to the screen the true stories of the war martyrs who were honored with the Paramveer Chakra. With this series he brought icons like Naseeruddin Shah to TV.

There is no Indian Cinema personality who has won the Palme d'Or (Grand Prix), National and Filmfare Award, introduced so many talented artists to Indian and World Cinema and achieved so many firsts in Indian Film History. His diverse filmography includes Social Dramas, Comedies, Film Noirs, Romantic Sagas, War Movies, Realistic Experimental Cinema and even Murder Mysteries as he pioneered parallel cinema with the likes of Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray and others. Such legends should never be forgotten.
