The year in review - 1951

• The top movie at the box office - Awaara was the Top movie of 1951 and went on sell more than 250M tickets worldwide, created such a box office record in Soviet Union that it took 21 years for a Russian movie to break it, sold 100M tickets in China, got remade multiple times in Turkey, Iran, China, Russia and many other countries, got nominated for the Palme d'Or in Cannes and is listed in Time Magazine's top 100 movies of all time.
• Other notable top grossing releases - Dev Anand kept his promise of giving his friend Guru Dutt a break if he became successful by producing his directorial debut Baazi. Guru Dutt's iconic Baazi launched the Bombay Noir Genre and suprisingly was written by none other then one of the founders of Method Acting in India, Balraj Sahni. 1951 also saw one of the Iconic Stars of the 40s give his biggest hit movies as Bhagwan Dada shined as the actor, writer, producer and director of Albela. Dilip Kumar was bestowed the title of the Trajedy King after his brilliant performance in Deedar.
• Notable flops of the year - Hamid Ali Khan started 1951 on a high after his 1950 hit movie Beqasoor with Madhubala but his lead actor aspiration came crashing after Daman, Dholak and Sarkar flopped at the box office. He would get sidelined into supporting roles for most of the 50s and 60s before he revived his career as one of Bollywood's suavest villains with the help of Mona Darling and Raabert in the 70s. We all know Hamid Ali Khan by his stage name of Ajit.
• Underrated gems - A 15 year old Nutan exploded onto the Bollywood scene as a lead actress with Nagina and Hum Log which she could not watch in theater herself because of its Adult theme and rating.
• Top actor of the year - Dev Anand became the hottest leading man of Bollywood after the success of Baazi, Do Sitaare, Nadaan, Sanam, Sazaa and Stage. Dilip Kumar also had a stellar year with Deedar, Taarana and Hulchul. Prithviraj Kapoor's younger brother Trilok Kapoor had a spectacular religion themed year with Shri Ganesh Janma, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan, Dasavtaar, Ishwar Bhakti, Maya Machindra and Raam Janma.
• Top actress of the year - Nargis headlined the year with blockbusters Awaara, Deedar, Hulchul and Pyaar Ki Baatein with Madhubala a close second with the hit movies Tarana, Badal, Khazana, Nazneen, Nadaan and Saiyaan. Nirupa Roy made a holy pair with Trilok Kapoor in the religion themed hit Shri Ganesh Janma, Shri Vishnu Bhagwan, Dasavtaar, Ishwar Bhakti, Maya Machindra, Raam Janma along with Jai Mahakali and Lav Kush
• Top debut of the year - Guru Dutt made his directorial debut with Baazi and went onto became one of Bollywood's most influential film makers of all time. Baazi also marked the debut of Kalpana Kartik who would go onto marry her co-lead of the movie Dev Anand. 1951 also saw the debut of one of Bollywood brightest actresses of the Golden Era named Vyjayanthimala in Bahar.
• Top director of the year - Raj Kapoor became the biggest directors of Bollywood after the global success of Awaara. Nanabhai Bhatt (Mahesh Bhatt's Father) had a very religious and successful year with Lav Kush, Ram Janma and Laxmi Narayan which starred child artist turned adult actress Meena Kumari a year before her breakthrough with Baiju Bawra in 1952.
• Top soundtrack of the year - Awaara achieved unprecedented global success with its iconic tunes getting covered in Russia, Turkey and Iran.
• Other Notable soundtracks of the year - Baazi and Albela were among the biggest albums of the year
• Top song of the year - Awaara Hoon was the hit of the year

1. Chintu Ka Birthday - A heart warming family drama set in Iraq during the Gulf War with a commendable performances by Vinay Pathak, Tilotama Shome and Seema Pahwa. Watch it if you like I am Kalam and Newton. (IMDB Rating - 7.6/10, My Rating - 8/10)
2. Stage of Siege: Temple Attack - A very well made tactical rescue operation movie starring Akshaye Khanna. Watch it if you like the Hotel Mumbai and Uri. (IMDB Rating - 7.5/10, My Rating - 8/10)
3. Tigers - A pretty gripping drama inspired by the Nestle Baby Food Scandal in Pakistan with an effective performance by Eemran Hashmi. Watch it if you like the Insider and Dark Waters. (IMDB Rating - 7.2/10, My Rating - 8/10)
4. 200: Halla Ho - A pretty good court room drama based on a true story starring Amol Palekar. Watch it if you like Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai and Mulk. (IMDB Rating - 7.4/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
5. Rashmi Rocket - A good sports drama based on multiple similar cases involving gender testing in women sports with a good performance by Taapsee Pannu. Watch it if you like Woman and Jersey. (IMDB Rating - 7.1/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
6. Kaagaz - A satirical dramedy based on a true story about government documents and bureaucracy with a nice performance from Pankaj Tripathi. Watch it if you like Little Miss Newton and Saaransh. (IMDB Rating - 7.3/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
7. The Sholay Girl - A nice biographical movie about Reshma Pathan, India's first stuntwoman and her work in movies like Sholay. Watch it if you like Queen and Gunjan Saxena (IMDB Rating - 7.2/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
8. Happi- A lighthearted drama about a simple 50 year man trying to survive in Mumbai with a good performance from Pankaj Kapur. Watch it if you like Raj Kapoor and Charlie Chaplin movies (IMDB Rating - 7.4/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)
9. Badnaam Gali - A pretty nice movie about surogacy in modern day India with good performances by Patralekha and Divvyendu. Watch it if you like Mimi and Janhit Mein Jaari. (IMDB Rating - 6.9/10, My Rating - 7/10)
10. Berlin - A slow burn spy thriller with good performances from Aparshakti Khurana, Ishwak Singh and Rahul Bose. Watch it if you like Khufiya and Raazi. (IMDB Rating - 6.8/10, My Rating - 7/10)

Which under-appreciated and under-discussed original series do you like and recommend?

Disney+Hotstar has been regularly releasing some high quality original movies like Dil Bechara, A Thursday and Gulmohar along with some quality and wacky content like Atrangi Re, Cuttputli, Freddy and Govinda Naam Mera with big names attached to them which get lot of views and acclaim. However there are some really good original movies which either fly a bit under the radar or dont get the level of acclaim they deserve. These are 10 such under-appreciated and under-discussed original movies that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

1. Kaun Pravin Tambe? - A very well made Inspirational Sports Biopic with a good performance by Shreyas Talpade. Watch it if you like Iqbal and Jhund. (IMDB Rating - 8.3/10, My Rating - 8/10)
2. Khuda Haafiz - An action packed action thriller starring Vidyut Jammwal. Watch it if you like Taken and Payback. (IMDB Rating - 7.1/10, My Rating - 7.5/10)

Superboys of Malegaon - An inspirational movie about friendship, dreams, inspiration, creativity and the Malegaon Film Industry based on a true story with amazing performances by the entire cast led by Adarsh Gourav and Vineet Kumar. However there are some really good original movies which either fly a bit under the radar or dont get the level of acclaim they deserve. These are 10 such under-appreciated and under-discussed original movies that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

There have been some high quality original series that have been released on various streaming platform like JioCinema, AltBalaji, MX Player and others that rarely get the same level of visibility and acclaim as the bugger streaming platforms. There are some really good series which have mostly flown a bit under the radar or didnt get the level of acclaim they deserved. These are my top 10 under-appreciated and under-discussed original series that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

1. Asur (Jio) - A gripping dark psychological crime thriller with a very good performance by Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti and Abhishek Chauhan. Must watch it if you like Sacred Games and Mirzapur. (IMDB Rating - 8.5/10, My Rating - 8.5/10)
2. The Test Case (Alt Balaji) - A very well made a military suspense thriller from Nagesh Kukunoor with a great performance by Nimrat Kaur. Watch it if you like G.I Jane and The Family Man. (IMDB Rating - 8.3/10, My Rating - 8.5/10)
3. Apharan (Alt Balaji) - A funny and gripping crime action thriller with a very good performance by Arunoday Singh and Mahie Gill. Watch it if you like Blackmail and Mirzapur. (IMDB Rating - 8.2/10, My Rating - 8.5/10)
4. Metro Park (Eros Now) - A funny sitcom set in Indian community in NJ, US with very good performances by Ranvir Shorey and Omi Vaidya. Watch it if you like Gullak and Mind the Malhotras. (IMDB Rating - 8.3/10, My Rating - 8/10)

3. Sunflower - A very quirky, smart and funny murder mystery with a great cast of Sunil Grover, Ranveer Shori and Ashish Vidyarthi. Watch it if you like Only Murders in the Building (IMDB Rating - 7.4/10, My Rating - 8/10)
4. Kaafir - A very well made slow burn suspense thriller with good performances from Dia Mirza and Mohit Raina. Watch it if you like series like the Diplomat and Breathe. (IMDB Rating - 8/10, My Rating - 8/10)

Disney + Hotstar has been regularly releasing some high quality original series like Special Ops, Criminal Justice, Aarya and The Night Manager along with several official remakes and originals with big names like Rudra, The Trial and Showtime which get lot of views and acclaim. However there are some really good series which either fly a bit under the radar or dont get the level of acclaim they deserve. These are 10 such under-appreciated and under-discussed original series that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

1. The Freelancer - A gripping spy action thriller from Neeraj Pandey with a very good performance by Mohit Raina. Watch it if you like Special Ops. (IMDB Rating - 8.1/10, My Rating - 8.5/10)
2. Grahan - A very gripping crime thriller with great performances by Pawan Malhotra, Zoya Hussain and Wamiqa Gabbi. Watch it if you like Paatal Lok (IMDB Rating - 8.3/10, My Rating - 8/10)
3. Taaza Khabar - A creative and interesting thriller with a good performance from Bhuvan Bam. Watch it if you like Guns and Gulaabs and Farzi. (IMDB Rating - 8/10, My Rating - 8/10)
4. Ghar Waapsi - A very well made, slice of life, feel good family drama. Watch it if you like Gullak and Panchayat. (IMDB Rating - 8.7/10, My Rating - 8/10)

However there are some really good series which either fly a bit under the radar or dont get the level of acclaim they deserve. These are 10 such under-appreciated and under-discussed original series that I really enjoyed and recommend to fans of their respective genres:

1. Bandish Bandits - An amazing classical music based romantic drama with great performances by Naseeruddin Shah, Sheeba Chaddha and Atul Agnihotri that deep dives into the world of classical music gharanas. Watch it if you like the Disciple. (IMDB Rating - 8.6/10, My Rating - 9/10)

4. Bambai Meri Jaan - A very well made period crime thriller chronicalling Dawood Ibrahim rise to infamy with stellar performances from Kay Kay Menon, Avinash Tiwary and Saurabh Shukla. Watch it if you like movies like Khakhee, Sacred Games and Mirzapur. (IMDB Rating - 7.5/10, My Rating - 8/10)
5. The Forgotten Army - A very well made historical war drama about the Indian National Army from Kabir Khan Watch it if you like Shershaah. (IMDB Rating - 7.9/10, My Rating - 8/10)
