Prior to pickup, driver calls me and tells me to cancel. What’s going on?

What should I have done? I requested pickup at an airport’s rideshare pickup spot. App shows driver is 6 minutes away, and not moving. I text him and tell him I’m at spot B2. App continues to shows driver remains at 1.4 miles out.

The driver calls me and tells me to cancel the ride. Thinking I’ll be hit with a cancellation charge, I did nothing. Then driver marks the trip as completed and Uber app shows I’ve incurred a $50 fee for the completed trip. Of course it would’ve been impossible to complete in just a few minutes and without picking me up.

I later went through the support options on the trip and Uber says they’ll refund me.

We’re flying to my niece’s graduation. The trip has been planned for months. So last minute we got the sad news that she didn’t pass a needed course and won’t be graduating. Of course she’s still down about this too.

We were planning to give a gift, but what do we do now? We’ll still meet with her in her college town since the trip can’t be cancelled.

Thoughts?
