Most workaways are illegal

In most countries, it is completely illegal to volunteer in exchange for accommodation and/or food on a tourist visa.

You’re stealing a paid job from a local for free. If you’re traveling to a poor country, it’s not like you don’t have enough opportunities in your home country. If you want to stay in a country for longer, you should’ve worked longer in your home country and made more money.

If you travel to a country, you should respect their country by respecting their laws or not go at all.

What do digital nomads contribute to a country?

I can’t seem to see a reason why countries should allow digital nomading. I see why America doesn’t allow foreign digital nomads at all and why it is illegal on tourist visas in almost every country.

  1. The work they do benefits their home country.

  2. The money they make sits in their bank account in their home country for people in their home country to borrow to build businesses.

  3. The average they spend (inject into the economy) per day is pretty minimal compared to tourists and there’s far more tourists. People with jobs generally spend more when they’re on vacation and not working.

  4. They’re often not taxed, even on digital nomad visas. They often pay taxes to their home country and not the host country.

  5. They don’t create jobs because they don’t own businesses so they can’t hire locals of the host country.

  6. They take up housing.

  7. A digital nomad can outbid a local with the same job title (and whose work contributes to a company in the host country) every single time. This is an unfair advantage over locals when it comes to housing, thereby driving housing prices up.

  8. It deeply immoral for a government to force its citizens to compete for a place to live with mediocre rich (middle class in their home country) foreigners who have access to jobs that citizens likely can’t legally obtain.

So what purpose do they actually serve?

TikTok racial discrimination

Has anyone else noticed that TikTok polices content based on the poster’s race. For example (not the only example but most obvious), they let black people say the N-word but ban white people who say it. I’m not saying either use is right but this is racial discrimination that is affecting monetized content creators.

I have 3 passports and I can’t find a job

I have U.S., EU, and Ecuadorian passports. I can’t find a job other than being a waiter or Amazon driver. I have a degree in management information systems. I have some experience as a data entry clerk. I can’t seem to get any job in IT no matter what I put or even lie about on my resume.

Isn’t volunteering on a tourist visa illegal in most countries?

According to the law in 99% of countries, volunteering in exchange for accommodation and/or food (especially when it’s for a for-profit business) counts as work. Even working remotely for a foreign company counts as work. Work is almost always illegal on tourist visas.
