She likes being affirmed, learning clinical language that describes her family members’ problems, repeating mantras, setting boundaries, and demanding apologies.

She does not like introspection, self-reflection, applying clinical concepts to herself, recognizing and correcting her cognitive distortions as they happen, discerning between boundaries and preferences, or apologizing for her own mistakes.

This is the problem with the popular understanding of therapy.

Therapy is not like eating from a charcuterie board.

It’s more like baking a cake from scratch.

You can’t just help yourself to the cocoa, sugar, and butter while ignoring the flour, eggs, and baking powder.

The cake won’t rise without all of the ingredients!

I love the name Brighton so much, but I can’t remove it from the Brighton Collectibles stores in malls.

I’m sure a lot of people feel the same way about Allegra and Tiffany.

Any other names you would use if they weren’t famous brands?

I see this come up once in a blue moon across the education subreddits and I’m certain it must come up more in real life. What are the most common disabilities you see in these scenarios? What are your success stories? In your experience, what specifically makes some conversations more challenging than others?
