Don’t make our mistake: Apply for your Brazil e-visa early

Don’t snooze on the new Brazil e-visa requirements for Americans, Canadians, Australians, and others.

We didn’t realize until about a month before travel that Brazil now requires an e-visa. The online application was $81 per person, required very specific visa photos, parent info including birthdates and nationalities, and extra paperwork for our minor child even though she’s traveling with both parents.

The hardest part was the portal. It kept rejecting our uploads — passports, birth certificate, photos, minor form — without explaining why. We tried different file types and sizes until everything finally went through.

We’re in Guatemala right now, so getting the minor form notarized meant hiring a lawyer, which was also not especially straightforward.

Everything is submitted now, and we fly to Manaus in about three weeks. Hoping it all comes back soon, but sharing in case this saves someone else a scramble.

Heads Up

If you’re planning to visit the National Palace of Culture in Guatemala City.

We hoped to take a tour, but were turned away because we didn’t have our physical IDs with us.

Photos of our U.S. driver’s licenses and passports on our phones were not accepted.

We generally leave our passports locked up and only carry them on travel days, so this caught us by surprise. Not a complaint—just something to know before you go.

The plaza and exterior are still worth a visit, though.

Don’t let the forecast scare you away

Before coming, every weather app made it look like nonstop rain. We arrived at the tail end of Tropical Storm Boris, which was intense, but since then it’s been way sunnier than expected with very little rain.

Just one person’s experience, but I wouldn’t let all those rain icons scare you off.

Flying a small drone

Has anyone flown a drone in Puerto Escondido recently?

I’m currently in Puerto Escondido and brought my drone along for our year of travel. I’m familiar with basic drone rules, but I’m curious about the local reality here.

Are there any areas where flying is generally accepted?

Any beaches where you’ve had good experiences flying?

Have you encountered any issues with police, lifeguards, locals?

Any areas I should definitely avoid?
