Can an aviation mechanic become a millwright?

Was in the military as a jet engine mechanic for 5 years. Worked as a data analyst for a large European airliner manufacturer when I got out. Didn’t work out so I went back to working in airplane engines. I Love the job but want something bigger. Literally. I want to work on big machines. They have me at $30 taking apart old gas turbines, but in this economy I can barely scrape by,

Why do people expect you to risk your safety for this job?

Just the other day we were putting an engine on a pallet. And as we’re rolling it away My coworker said “go stand there so you can stop the engine from hitting the wall”. I said “no, I’m not standing between the engine and the wall, that’s so stupid“. If the engine hits the wall, fix it. But we should probably be thinking of another method to do this without the engine hitting the wall.

Or the other time an engine almost rolled off a pallet and they got mad at me because I didn’t run in and try to stop it from rolling. Fuck outta here, the engine weights 5000 lbs.

Is $300 enough right now to help?

communication has been very sparse with my aunt . She said she needed some money yesterday morning and haven’t heard from her since.

I was just going to zelle her $300 and hopefully she receives it. Is that enough to help get her somewhere right now?

How do I apply for GI Bill retroactive induction

I got my 70% rating the day after my EAS. I went to school and failed out due to my disabilities. then I worked a couple of jobs in aviation related to what I did in the marine corps. I had applied for VR&E and was going through the process so they could get me tools I needed for the job. Eventually I got fired and the VR&E counselor just stopped responding to me.

I began a graduate degree program in aviation maintenance at ERAU using the GI bill. But I was reading about GI bill induction. Would I just reapply for VR&E. Since then my rating went up to 80.

Professors keeps kicking back assignments multiple times.

Im in online graduate program studying the same field I work in. It is a physically and mentally demanding field.

The professors is constantly kicking back assignments to redo because he wants us to get a higher grade. Even though, through his own words, the assignment meets the passing grade initially. If you don’t redo it he won’t post the grade and it’ll turn to a zero after the deadline. It’s ridiculous.

If you do redo it he’ll regrade it completely and give you the new grade, even if it’s lower. So some people resort to just turning in the same unchanged assignment over and over until the deadline passes.

I just need to pass, it’s not that deep. I’m already exhausted from the work week and this guy keeps making us do the same assignments over and over again. Just give me the B or don’t. But don’t waste my time. What am I missing here?

Why would a department offer significantly lower pay and a long contract ?

there’s a department in my area offering $25/hr at a 60 month contract. And the 60 months starts after the academy. Other local departments offer $10k-15k more and the obligation ranges from 1-3 years. What am I missing here?

Anyone else sweat more normally ?

even before my weight gain, I always sweat easily and a lot. I’m sure weight loss contributed a lot, but now I don’t sweat the moment I step outside and even when I work out the amount of sweat isn’t ridiculous.

Doctor won’t switch back to semaglutide despite no results?

I started using semaglutide in January and was down around 45 lbs by may. it was working great and worked my way up to 1.125 mg/ml through Ro. it was too expensive so I went to the VA where they gave me zepbound and started me at 2.5 mg and am currently on week 3 of 5 mg. A month and a half in and I was stuck at the same weight. I was getting frustrated so I tried some left over sema I had, unexpired, from Ro and immediately lost 2 lbs that week breaking the plateau. Clearly zepbound isn’t working for me. I’ve already told my doctor and she refuses to switch me to a wegovy. what do I do?

Do Highway patrol SWAT/SRT get a lot of action?

I’ve been eyeing FHP because of their cruisers and they’re all ripped af, but ultimately I do want to do SRT. I was wondering though if they’re usually full time and if so do they get a lot of calls?

Will a degree help me get to sergeant?

One of my biggest regrets from the marine corps was not pushing for sergeant, only made it to corporal.

I have a masters degree and was wondering if that would help me eventually make it to sergeant?

Are beards frowned upon?

I had my physical agilities test this morning and the graders were all just hounding on the guys who werent clean shaven. I’ve seen plenty of officers around town with beards. I’m guessing they’re technically allowed but are they generally frowned upon?

The blatant disregard of safety is really starting to make me hate the job.

This dude who is technically in charge of me doesn’t seem to know anything about safety.

To him the manual is “just the manual”. He thinks he can Jerry rig everything instead of using the damn fucking tools the company spent thousands on to do the job the right way.

Maintenance stand? No, thanks a wooden pallet works.

Use the proper OEM adapters to lift the engine vertical to horizontal position? No, thanks, we’ll just tip over the 5,000 lbs engine and let it land on the hoisted strap.

The hydraulic wrench is leaking at 10,000 PSI? I’ll just cover the leak with a rag in my hand”

He looks at me like I’m the idiot when I tell him the hydraulic fluid can go through his skin. “it’s just oil”

But holy fuck if some WD40 splashes on him the man is running across the hangar.

wtf. The pay is good but that’s really killing the job for me.

My real boss bypasses him and comes directly to me becauae I worked on a similar engine in the marine corps. But he cant fire that guy since he’s technically been there longer than my boss.

I’m fully convinced he hasn’t been fired because they feel bad for him.

Renouncing citizenship to enter Brazil?

I am a dual citizen of the US and Brazil. I was born and raised in the US and was granted citizenship through my father when I was a kid. i had the passport but it expired like 10 years ago.

I went to renew it so I can visit my aging grandmother and was denied because I never did the mandatory military conscription at 18. I’m 30 now, and I was in the US military and didn’t want to mess with my security clearance, and I’m undergoing another clearance investigation for a new job, so enlisting now is not an option.

So I figured I would apply for a visa but I don’t qualify for it because I’m a Brazilian citizen. But I can’t travel with an expired Brazilian passport.

So I was thinking if I renounced Brazilian citizenship and then reapplied for a visa. To me it makes sense since I don’t really consider myself Brazilian anyways, I don’t even know the language unfortunately.

Anyone have experience with this type of issue? I just want to see my grandmother.

Why are tooling companies so weird?

We need a tool for one of our engines. We get the part number and find a company that says they have one and are selling it. We reach out and the exchange goes something like this.

“gives us a price.”

“How about this much?”

“that’s too low”.

”Okay, how much do you want for it?”

“Give us a higher bid”

“Okay, how about $3,000 more?”

“Still too low”

“How. Much. Do. You. Want”

*no response *
