Douthat State Park

Went camping this past weekend at Douthat State Park in VA. Even though it was in the mountains, it was really humid. Had thunderstorms Friday afternoon just after I got the tent set up, then again Saturday late afternoon. Woke up to torrential downpours and a thunderstorm on Sunday and had to pack up in the rain. Still had a good time, went to a group potluck on Friday night and a campfire on Saturday. And got in some time paddle boarding.

Douthat Lake paddle

I went camping this past weekend at Douthat State Park in VA. Managed to get in a paddle between the rain and thunderstorms.

First raspberries

Getting my first ever raspberries. A friend gave me a plant (cane?) and I potted it. It was 4" tall, now it's 2' tall and has some berries. I'm super excited. They're in a big pot, about 22" across, to keep them from spreading. But I'm going to need to create a bed in my yard so I get more.

Persimmon graft growth?

I had a Nikita's Gift, grafted onto American Persimmon rootstock. It was planted inground and doing well. I went out of town Father's Day weekend and upon return, it was completely broken off. The broken off piece was completely dried out, so no possiblity of taping it together. Through the remnants back in a pot, and set it aside. Now it's growing a branch, and it appears to be from the graft. If you look at the original tree you can see the graft. Does anyone else think it's growing from the graft and not the rootstock?

Blueberry harvest

My little blueberry harvest today from my potted blueberries that I bought at Lidl in the spring. They were labeled as Elliot.

Camping & SUP last weekend, and Woobie!

A few more photos of my trip to John Kerr Lake in VA last weekend. Water levels were extremely low due to the drought. Paddled Friday afternoon, and then again on Saturday afternoon after a rainy Friday night and Saturday morning. I saw a suggestion for pot stickers for breakfast and they really hit the spot. Brown in oil, then add water and steam. I literally eat cold soaked oatmeal every morning for breakfast (take it to work and heat in the microwave), so I wanted something different. In the summer I put my self-inflating mattress on a cot for better airflow, in the winter I ditch the cot. It's an Exped knockoff with an R value over 7. And I finally found my Woobie!!! Iykyk. It was perfect for sleeping in 60°s at night. I've had it since the early 90s, when I replaced my original from someone who gave me theirs from Vietnam. Perfect piece of kit.

SUP & camping, finally

It's been almost a year since I've been paddling. Camped on John Kerr Lake, a reservoir in VA this past weekend. Was able to paddle both Friday and Saturday afternoons. Friday launched from the campsite, but Friday overnight we had rain and it made the shoreline a quagmire of mud. Went to the boat ramp instead. Saw heron, and one eagle. The drought has effected the water levels and it's at it's lowest in decades, didn't see any wildlife other than the few birds.

It's raining

Paddled yesterday afternoon. It started raining about 11pm, but supposed to clear out by noon. Only one other camper in the non-electric loop. Just how I like it. Currently 65° on John Kerr Lake in VA.

Black Krim or Cherokee Purple

I was in a bit of a hurry when I picked this tomato and it's been at least a week sitting on the counter, to finish ripening. I don't know whether I got it off the BK or the CP tomato plant. The other CP tomato I had was watery and cracking and not very flavorful. The one CP I was waiting on, still on a plant, got mangled by a squirrel before it turned. This tomato was really flavorful.

New (sort of) to e-readers and need advice for B&W, 7"

I'm looking for an e-reader to read books from the library - probably 95% of the time. I'm old and think I'd be better off with 7" vs. 6" size. I was interested in the Kobo, but it appears the Kobo Clara BW is only 6". Any other suggestions? I read a LOT of regular books, but sometimes for book club, physical books are checked out and there is a Libby version available. I really don't want to support Bezos. I had a Kindle Fire which I now realize wasn't a real e-reader, and years ago had a Nook from Barnes & Noble. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Camping at Kerr Lake, VA side

Two weekends ago a friend and I went camping near Clarksville VA on John Kerr Lake. Nice site, right on the water, but with the heat index, it was about 98° on our first day while setting up. And due to the extreme drought in VA, the ground was like concrete. I’d hammer in 2 tent stakes and have to rest in the shade. It took 1.5 hours to set up my tent, typically a 10 minute job. I think my camping season is over until it cools off. We took a break at a local Mexican restaurant for dinner, just to be inside for awhile. Saturday was 91°, but due to lower humidity and a slight breeze, it was much more comfortable.

Black Krim is not happy

None of my other tomato plants look like this. It got really hot here, central VA, but this tomato plant was under shade cloth with some others. Other tomato plants not under shade cloth don't look like this. Should I pull it?

Today, in 1973, the Greatest horse race was run, do you remember?

In 1973, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths. I can remember my parents watching it on TV, jumping up and down in excitement. We lived about 40 minutes from Meadow Farm where Secretariat was born, and I now live about 20 minutes from Meadow Farm. Seeing him win the Belmont Stakes is a core memory for me. Does anyone else remember this race? No horse has broken his record since. It looked like he sped up in the turn.

Browning of leaves

The leaves on two of my blueberries, that were fine yesterday, have turned brown. The plants were up-potted about 2 weeks ago, and acidifier and Berry Tone added then. Soil felt slightly damp. Could it be heat stress? I’m in Central VA and it was 90° today, with a high UV index and low humidity.

Blueberries in Containers

I purchased some blueberries bushes from the grocery store about 8 weeks ago. I was going to put them in ground, but we’ll have to amend soil. I’m thinking about leaving them in the containers, because they’re doing really well. I’m in Central VA, how would they fare over the winter? Would they need to be in larger pots? I don’t have a garage or someplace to put them inside if it gets really cold.

Whistling noise

Sometimes I can hear air whistling through the tiny little holes where this connector goes into the head gear. As my old head gear aged, it got worse. I replaced it about 4 weeks ago and it's whistling away. It is dependent on my head position. Any ideas?

Newly planted persimmon

I planted this two weeks ago, and the weather has been all over the place here in Central VA. Warm, cool, very little rain. I’m watering about every three days. I’ve noticed on warmer days where it went over 80 and was in the sun all day. It looked a little wilted. I’m sure it’s transplant shock. We’re getting ready to have some 90+ degree days for the next 3 to 4 days. I put a tomato cage around the tree and hung a little sheet of frost cloth on the southwest side to protect it from afternoon sun during this heat wave. Is this ok?

I’ve been wanting an Omnia stovetop camp oven for awhile. Found this at Lidl for $12.99. Couldn’t justify the $79 for an Omnia, I won’t bake every trip. It includes a silicone pan and a baking rack.

Camp oven, I’ve been wanting one

I’ve had my eye on the Omnia stovetop camp oven for awhile now. Not sure what I want to bake at camp, but I want to do it. Lidl has these for $12.99. Includes a silicone pan and a baking rack.

I'm in Central VA and ordered a persimmon earlier this year (hasn't arrived yet). I've also purchased 4 blueberries to plant, and I have a fig tree that I overwintered in a pot that I want to plant. We're in a severe drought and my clay soil is like concrete. I've tried digging with a trenching shovel with serrated side edges. I'm standing on the shovel and it might go in the ground a quarter inch. Has anyone one used one of the battery powered augers? I'd like to get things planted and plant the tree when it arrives. Thanks for any ideas.
