PC hard freezes when under GPU load — keyboard/mouse lose power gradually, fans still running
Hi everyone, my PC has been hard freezing whenever I put the GPU under load (games, benchmarks). I’ve done extensive troubleshooting and I’m fairly confident it’s the PSU, but wanted a second opinion before buying.
Specs:
• CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (installed Nov 2025)
• GPU: RTX 3070 (power limit set to 180W)
• RAM: 32GB Corsair CMK16GX4M1E3200C16 DDR4 3200MHz dual channel, XMP enabled
• Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 AORUS PRO (Rev 1.0)
• PSU: Corsair CV650 650W 80+ Bronze (purchased summer 2020 — 6 years old)
• OS: Windows 11
Symptoms:
• PC hard freezes under GPU load — image stays frozen on screen, keyboard and mouse lose power gradually (lights flicker then slowly fade out), fans keep running, must hold power button to shut down
• Started suddenly today — was playing BF6 fine last night
• Also freezes during Superposition benchmark
• Recently froze while just browsing with minimal tabs open
• For the past 6 months, PC occasionally doesn’t recognize keyboard on boot — have to unplug and replug after restart
Key observation: When launching Superposition, the mouse RGB flickers then slowly dims and turns off right before the freeze — suggesting gradual voltage drop on the 5V rail rather than a sudden cutoff.
What I’ve already ruled out:
• Temperatures: GPU 37C, CPU 67C at time of crash — not overheating
• GPU drivers: DDU clean install + fresh driver 596.36 — still freezes
• RAM: MemTest86 ran 2+ hours, Pass 2/4 complete, Errors = 0
• GPU hardware fault: no artifacts, image stays frozen not black screen
• GPU reseated, all PSU cables replugged — still freezes
• GPU power limit reduced to 80% — still freezes in Superposition
• BIOS updated from F64g to F67a latest for B450 AORUS PRO — still freezes
• WHEA-Logger: 0 events — no CPU, PCIe, or memory hardware errors
Event Viewer findings:
• Kernel-Power Event ID 41 at every crash
• BugcheckCode = 0 — system lost power before Windows could write a crash dump
• RTUsbSwSrvc (Realtek USB service) terminated unexpectedly at crash time
• No WHEA-Logger events at all
