I love my wok! Going on three years of use here soon
Just wanted to share a somewhat silly story of patience.
I’ve always wanted a stand mixer. I grew up watching the food network as much, if not more than Cartoon Network as a little kid, I’d watch iron chef, diners, drive ins and dives, barefoot contessa and a whole slew of other chefs. Fell absolutely in love with cooking.
I never went without a homemade meal thanks to my parents, money was tight growing up, though we were rich in so many other areas.
I think at some point though, I started to associate certain possessions with wealth, kitchenaids being one of them.
For the past couple of years since being out of college and finally having some access to some disposable income, I‘ve finally started looking for some kitchenaids in my budget. Or rather I‘ve preferred to not shell out msrp price for the new ones (not that the quality is very reflective of the investment anymore unfortunately).
I know we get attached to material things as humans, to some limit it’s not healthy, but it’s been pretty exciting finally building up my dream kitchen step by step and purchase by purchase. I’ve had some good deals pop up that I was sad to have missed out on. This weekend though I was finally able to pick up not only one, but two stand mixers! I found someone selling a pro 600 and a K5-A for $75, with a whole slew of attachments. If you saw me post before, the mixers were 4 hours away and some change. My wife was super supportive, she suggested we go get them and make a little weekend getaway out of it, it was super fun.
It seems like the K5-A might be from 1951, unfortunately I couldn’t find any serial number sticker on the baseplate to find the date of production.
They both run but need some TLC. I think they both need some regreasing. The 600 has an issue with the planetary falling off. I’m excited to clean them up and get them running well again.
Thanks for reading my little story, and apologies if you see me posting fairly frequently as I clean them up.
Excited to finally have one and join the club 😊
Would you drive 4 hrs for a pro 600 and a K5A in rough shape but working order? Seller’s asking $75 for everything pictured.
I don’t have any mixers. I’m in the market for one, so I plan more so to use them. I plan on selling the 600 and keeping the k5a.
I live out in the western part of the U.S., so I don’t know how prevalent these older mixers are over here.
Assuming they don’t sell before I decide 😅. I already lost out on a mint condition K5 solid state with the Hobart logo on the side.
Should I wait or jump on it?
What do you guys think?
TL;DR - Is it a waste of our money and an appliance tech’s time to come out and give this working machine a check up/tune up? It runs well.
Our newer Speed Queen Washer’s (awn412sp111tw01) transmission gave out, after two sheared bolt heads, advice from here and some other techs, we decided to replace it.
Found this old 80’s - 90’s commercial washer. It runs well, needs some tlc on some chipped paint, but no issues besides that. We booked an appliance tech to come out and take a look at it on Friday.
We’re slightly paranoid after our other second hand washer gave out, since we can’t afford a new machine as much as we’d like, after research this was the best we could find.
The company did mention that they don’t do tune ups, but they’re fine to come out and take a look at the machine if we really want to. My questions are: am I wasting the tech’s time and my money. Are washer maintenance checks/tune ups even a thing?
Hello friends, I’ve been meaning to come on here and ask the experts about the best KitchenAids
TL;DR - In your opinion, which model can handle the most beating and is most resilient.
I’m interested in hearing opinions about which models are the most resilient, reliable, can handle a large workload, just some of the best built models out there and their pros and cons.
The ones I see pop up most are the following, and for the following reasons:
Hobart N50: Heavy, mechanical, just an all around tank. (doubt I’ll be able to find and afford this though, still curious).
K5A / K45: Hobart built, no sacrificial gear, easy to repair and if maintained can easily become an heirloom. Louder but an absolute workhorse, often referred to as the best.
KSM6573: DC motor, high torque and smaller capacity (overpowered?), quiet, easy to add ingredients due to bowl design. Discontinued and harder to find attachments due to its tulip shaped bowl.
KSMC895: Modern DC motor, lighter and quieter than the vintage models, more electronics. Can sense if it needs to deliver more torque? Expensive though.
KSM70: AC motor, loud, large capacity, 11 speeds, more electronics, simple-ish to trouble shoot though expensive to repair. Attachments are easier to source and find.
I’m a little bit of a research nerd and have been wanting a KitchenAid in our kitchen for quite a long time and can finally be in the market for one. I love cooking, so I’m wanting to use it with a meat grinder attachment, make pizza doughs, I’m wanting to get into sourdough and more baking just in general.
Interested in hearing which model is your favorite. Thanks for reading ❤️
Small amount of context:
I was looking endlessly for this pan for a number of years, had the idea of asking this subreddit about its whereabouts, found out it was discontinued, so big sad.
BUT!! Made-in brought it back!! Pretty stoked, just wanted to share.
