Letting go of a friendship that never really became what I hoped it would be. Am I reading too much into this?

Hello! Apologies for the long post, but here we go. I've been struggling a bit with a recent online friendship and I'd appreciate some outside perspective - my overthinking tends to make me quite narrow-sighted =(

I met them on Twitter/X/whatever you'd like to call that crazy place through a fandom community. They actually reached out to me first because they were new and wanted to interact with people. We got along well enough, so much so that they even asked to follow my private account. Naturally, I was happy about it and thought we'd become the type of friends who chat on a regular basis, given our mutual enthusiasm.

Thing is, our one-on-one conversations never truly developed. We talked for maybe two weeks, then they left my last messages on read. It's been nearly a month now. Meanwhile, they're extremely active on the timeline and have very long conversations with other people, sometimes replying to the same person multiple times throughout the day with paragraphs and entire threads that consist of various posts.

They’ve mentioned that they have a habit of reading messages immediately and then forgetting to reply. They also confirmed through TL replies that they do DM other people rather consistently (I don't actively stalk them or anything to see what they've been up to, it's just that I don't follow that many people on private and end up seeing their posts frequently).

I've tried not to think too much about it. I really did. They've told me several times that I'm not annoying or "too much" (sometimes I end up oversharing and rambling when I'm excited about chatting), and they've also said that they've been thinking about me. I don't necessarily think they're lying about any of that. I think it's more that they genuinely like me and enjoy having me around, while simply clicking much more naturally with other people.

At this point I've stopped initiating DMs/interaction as a whole and stopped trying to maintain the friendship on my own because the whole ordeal was making me incredibly anxious. They've also stopped interacting with my posts. I don't think there's any real hostility between us, but the friendship (?) has basically died.

I think I've finally accepted that we just have different communication styles and that they naturally gravitate much more to other people who have similar tastes. That's okay. I don't think they're a bad person, and I don't think I was wrong about wanting the friendship to develop either. I'm just disappointed because they were the one who reached out first, so I had assumed there was more mutual interest in becoming friends.

So, does it sound like I've been overlooking something? Is stepping back completely the right thing to do, or am I being unnecessarily sensitive/too in my head about it?

Thank you!
