No idea what to do with old workstation pc.

Hi everyone.

A few years back around 2023 I bought a thinkstation p320 as a computer to mess around with.

I have barely used it outside of 1 instance when my other pc broke.
I put the ram, cpu and storage in it as it came without them.

A few weeks I was messing around in the bios to try and fix the fans being unnecessary loud. I switched the fan option to be to “quiet mode” and that’s where the problem escalated.

Now the pc only outputs a signal if it boots into the operating system. The bios or boot menu show a black screen/nothing but they definitely can be accessed and used just can’t see.

I was thinking of repurposing the computer as a gaming machine. But motherboard replacements seem to be more than I paid for the machine.

It does turn on but beeps due to no ram. It has been sitting around for a while unused. I do have a 650 watt bequiet psu I could use for turning it into a decent machine the only thing is the board is limited to quad core processors and has a proprietary 250 watt psu.

Any advice is welcome, thank you

Edit: corrected proprietary psu wattage 300 to 250

Looking to flip computers

Hi everyone.

I am based in a small town in Scotland with around 900 people in population. The surrounding area is about 20-30k people going by guesses.

I’m currently 17 looking to start a side hustle and possibly scale it over time.

I have basic skills with computers. And am looking to start pc flipping. The market around here is very low but there is competition. From business and side hustlers.

I have built computers before but to be honest not the best at it. I’ve been looking to refurbish laptops/desktops.

I’ve notice some (not if a good portion) of pc repair shops in the local town have some sort of weakness. As I’ve had some problems with them before.

I wouldn’t want to repair others devices as I think the risk is high for now. But just refurb and sell desktops. The only issues I have are.

. Sourcing windows license keys from official retailers. (They are expensive)

. Managing devices with batteries as there is no place around here to dispose of li-on batteries.

. Sourcing parts for a reasonable price
I think I might have someone I can contact about that.

I’ve been thinking about starting my own computer company that specialises in Linux. This is more of a passion for a living thing more than a problem I found I can solve tho.

Any advice/questions is welcome thank you.

MSI Prestige 14 (2023 intel core ultra) track pad loose

Hi everyone

Its been around a year since i purchased my first msi laptop it being the prestige 14 AI evo with the core ultra 5 processor.

There appears to be a flaw with the model of this laptop where the track pad feels loose and rattles a-lot. I've yet to see one of these laptops that doesn't do it.

I didn't do anything to the laptop to get it to be this way. After a week of having the laptop it just started happening.

Just out of curiosity. Has anyone ever received one of these units without the track-pad being like this?. msi support considers this "normal behaviour" from what i have heard.

i have gotten so annoyed at it that it has made me buy a think pad.

From what i know the construction of the track-pad appears to be a hover design with weak adhesive. causing this.

WIBTAH if i didnt let my sister use my printer agian.

Hi everyone.

My sister who is older than me and commonly borrows my printer to print off notes and university work.

I own the printer and have used it a few times before but not much. My sister has said countless times she will get her own printer, she has one i think is from canon or epson (i cant remember exactly) which she has had for around 8 months now. But cant use it because she thinks its broken (because its a wired printer) it required a cable im sure its not a proprietary one. For the printer to work.

A few months ago (i know it might sound petty because this was months ago but i am bringing it up now) she for the 2nd time is a month at 12 in the morning swung open my room door while i was sleeping one time shouting i should be up at this time for someone my age. takes my printer without asking. i go to mum. Who doesn't really seem to care. i said to my mum about my sister barging into my room to take my printer again and i asked if she could have a word with my sister about it.

my mum goes to my sister and gives her into trouble but my sister doesnt wont stop going on about how she pays for the ink therefore she can use the printer like its hers. And then she goes onto how she paid for the paper (Which i did) i said that i paid for the paper then she just gives up while she is leaving assuming for university.

then it comes to today. at around 19:00 hours she has a raised voice "shouting" i should call it. Opens my room door while i'm watching youtube. and grabs in a raised voice asks for my printer. she then takes it through after i give her it and then comes back for the cable. i said i don't have any to spare. and she says i must because "i'm the computer guy" and wont stop going around my room still shouting and laughing at something she wouldn't stop going on about the number 9 by the sounds of it.

I do have autism and do get annoyed when my sister does this.

I think if i did refuse to let her use the printer i would put the cartridges out in the hall for her to use it on her printer. And buy my own if i ever need them. i would probably be called selfish my my parents and my sister will probably complain.

Would wibtah?

Thanks for reading, any answers are welcome.

Small update.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to the post. I am open to putting the printer into a sperate room for everyone to use. But in this house there isn't really a place. outside my room to put it. I dont want to say to my parents that i don't want to share my printer anymore as i will probably get shouted at and called names. My sister has said over and over that she will get her own printer but has never came through with that promise this has been going on over a year now.

My parents seem to not care about what my sister has done. i'm considering just buying a new printer completely.

Thank you

Hi everyone

its been around a year since I pulled the trigger on a prestige ai 14 evo.

It became my main laptop but knowing me I should have done my research.

this laptop is marketed as a business laptop. While it feels more like a consumer machine because of the build quality and just general reliability of the chassis.

Also for the price the build quality seems to have had some corners cut.

the keyboard

the keys are small and the backlight is 4 options for lighting instead of it being hardware controlled.

The trackpad sometimes just randomly feels loose and then feels like its fine (it started doing this 2 weeks after I bought the laptop) I haven't dropped it banged it against anything for it to do that.

Ports

It has 2 thunderbolt 4 ports on the right side and one is required to charge the device.

It also has 1 usb 3 port colour coded for usb 2. it also has hdmi, ethernet, and a headphone jack.

performance

The device is quite good for light gaming* the intel arc graphics is capable of running helldivers 2 albeit at low settings at 1600x900 on a external monitor.

the processor in mine has 14 cores 4+8+2 core config it is good for coding and doing multicore tasks.

Windows

In windows the gpu driver keeps reinstalling a specific version from 2023. This driver also has a issue where postal 2 wont launch. And some games have 20% slower performance.

I needed to manually disable windows update to get it working using a custom script just to make sure it wouldn't reinstall itself again.

Linux

I tried several distros cachyos, arch, ubuntu, fedora, and cutefish os, it does require some manual troubleshooting for helldivers 2 as the non intel iris xe gpu driver is the default for some reason and has to be manually switched over for it to work properly.

Its got me thinking of making the jump to thinkpad because of this and just using this machine of a backup.

Local AI

This is probably not the best idea for a machine like this. But it can run some lower end Ai models like Gemma 3 1b. Gwen 2.5 coder 3b, ect via lmstudio.

Upgrades.

For upgrades there is 2 SSD slots and 2 ram slots awaiting for those who take on the challenge it is to get into this laptop. There is a bit of a extra length at the back for better colling.

Any replies are welcome, thanks for reading
