As the title says. I’m sure there’s no obvious answer but it always seems to be this trope where the ship will need more power for X climatic scene and the captain says something like “turn off life support“ or the engineer will have already done it.

Some episodes it’s a count down till life support turns off and when it does, in some cases, people are immediately affected while it seems they can turn it off for a while in other scenes.

I love Star Trek but this is one of those things that I kind of get a chuckle whenever it comes up in an episode.
