Seeking PhD Application Advice

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in an MS Biology program (Neuroscience concentration) and planning to apply for PhD programs this fall. I’m looking for some perspective on how to navigate the process this time around.

My Stats/Background:

- Current MS GPA: 3.44

- Undergrad BS (Biology) GPA: 3.01

- Previous Cycle: Applied after my BS but wasn't accepted, largely due to missing recommendation letters and incomplete applications. Admittedly I do also feel like I didn't do enough it a lot of my applications (in terms of researching the faculty and my research/personal statements) to show that I'm a strong candidate for their programs

I’m feeling much more focused now, but I have a few questions for those who have been through this:

- How did you organize your application timeline? What did you wish you started earlier? What do you recommend I start doing now if I haven't already?

- What was your experience like cold-emailing PIs? How did you frame those conversations to see if you were a good fit for their lab?

- Since I struggled with this before, I’m nervous about securing enough strong letters. How did you build relationships with faculty specifically to ask for an LoR, and what can I do between now and fall to strengthen those ties?

- To avoid burnout and high costs, how many schools do you recommend applying to? Is there a "sweet spot"?

- What was the overall process like for you? Any "red flags" or "green flags" I should look for in programs?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Hey guys!

If you're looking for a new way to stay active this summer that isn't just the usual kickball or softball, come check out Quadball (formerly Quidditch).

I'm planning to host casual summer pickups and scrimmages in the local area (mainly at the UAlbany fields, but I'm open to better suggestions) on Sundays and/or weeknights (finalizing dates now based on interest) in the next two weeks. It’s a fast-paced, co-ed, multi-ball sport that blends rugby, dodgeball, and wrestling.

Whether you’re a former college athlete or have never touched a ball in your life, we’re keeping these summer sessions relaxed, fun, and non-competitive. We want to get outside and play. Just bring water and cleats (or sneakers). We provide the hoops, brooms, and balls.

Drop a comment if you're interested or have questions! Hope to see some of y'all out there!
