Ford Focus Mk1 rear wiper issue — could this fail TÜV/HU in Germany?

Hi everyone,

I have a Ford Focus Mk1, probably 2002 or 2003, and I live in Germany.

I have an issue with the rear window wiper. I’ll attach a video showing exactly how it behaves. The rear washer works and the wiper moves when I use the washer, but the normal rear wiper function does not work properly.

My question is: could this cause the car to fail the TÜV/HU inspection in Germany?

The front wipers and washers work normally. The problem is only with the rear wiper.

Any advice appreciated

Ford Focus Mk1 rear wiper issue — works with washer but not normally

Hi everyone,

I have a Ford Focus Mk1, probably 2002 or 2003, and I’m having an issue with the rear wiper.

The problem first appeared in March. The rear wiper stopped working properly, and a mechanic told me it was probably the rear wiper motor.

In April, I replaced the rear wiper motor with another used one. After that, it worked normally for a short time. However, after about 2–3 weeks, I tried to use the rear wiper again and noticed that the same problem had returned.

Today I checked the relay. I swapped the horn relay with the rear wiper relay. The result was exactly the same: the rear wiper still behaves like in the video. The horn works normally with the relay that was previously used for the rear wiper, so I assume the relay itself is probably OK.

One more detail: when I use the rear washer, the wiper seems to work normally. The issue happens when I try to use the rear wiper by itself.

I can hear a click when operating the rear wiper, but it seems to come more from the stalk/steering column area. I’m not 100% sure if I’m hearing the relay or just the switch/stalk mechanism.

Any advice on what to check next would be appreciated.
