3d printed base boards

Doing a bit of an experiment to see if I can 3d print a layout, the first 3 boards are now wired trains are running (btw ignore the missing buffer and coal on the j50, I brought it like that and im going to fix it one day)

Progress on my NTrack Module

This album is progress on my N-Track module. I hope to show the module at a Nov. train show.

  • 48"x30"
  • Lauan Plywood construction (everything cut from a single 4'x8' sheet. - Soft pine dimensional lumber is used for C-clamp placement and as a base for screwing/mounting the legs.
  • All structures, bridges, abutments, railings, fences, etc. are original 3D models printed on a Bambu A1 with PLA 0.4mm nozzle and 0.2mm layer heights. Apart from the Kato track and raw materials, there are no commercial kits or components.
  • Rocks are hand carved plaster over foam board insulation.
  • The three required community tracks run through the module below grade. The scenery including rocks and structures lifts out easily to access the community tracks.
  • The rocky side is the front. The module is setup to be an annex to my regular layout as well as a display unit. The rocks align with scenery on my main layout.

What 3D modeling tools do you use, and what are the pros and cons?

I primarily use SketchUp Pro. It has all kinds of functionality and plugins that I'm barely aware of. I essentially use the subset of features that were present in the last free desktop version, SketchUp 2017. I also use Blender.

  • SketchUp:

    • Pros:
      • Easy to learn. You draw 2D shapes and then extrude them to form 3D geometry
    • Cons:
      • Not good for organic shapes like human figures. It's better for architecture
      • Ordinary usage generates many instances of internal geometry that makes models non-manifold. Non-manifold geometry confounds slicer software.
      • Recent versions of SketchUp do not always delete geometry that you deleted in the editor. Geometry becomes invisible and confounds slicer software even though there is nothing you can see or delete to correct the model. When this happens, you can no longer edit the model in SketchUp. You MUST move on to a different tool like Blender. Every time this happens, I think, "Why am I using SketchUp if I have to move on to Blender anyway?"
  • Blender

    • Pros:
      • Awesomely powerful with features like "select non-manifold" which enables correction of non-manifold geometry. Oddly, the feature only works when in two of the three available selection modes. There is no indication why. There is no documentation that I have found that explains this seemingly unnecessary limitation.
    • Cons:
      • The most difficult to learn/use software ever created. I can only assume the creators had never used a graphical user interface before. Few standard user interface conventions like copy/paste, methods of selection, or command keys work at all. Some features are not available through menus and can only be accessed through difficult to discover key combinations. The arguably most important user interface element is only available by typing 'n'. Not Control-n. Not Command-n. Just the single character, n. I used Blender for at least five years before discovering this even existed.
      • File importers mangle geometry. I have submitted fixes for the Collada File import at least six times for six versions of Blender over ten years. The fixes have never been incorporated. The bug is simple: Blender ignores the "Units" information stored in Collada files and assumes all units are "Inches". It's a strange choice for software that originated in Europe. I design in millimeters. Blender makes all my models 25.4 times too big.

1916 IRT subway car. First full FDM test print

A little update on the 1916 IRT car I’ve been working on for the elevated railway project.

The model is mostly finished now and this is the first time I’ve been able to put the complete body on the elevated structure and station. Seeing it in place definitely helped me catch a few things I still want to tweak.

This test was printed with a 0.4 mm nozzle. I’m actually pretty happy with the rivet and window detail, but I think this model is right on the edge of what makes sense with a 0.4. I’m going to pick up a 0.2 mm nozzle and see if i can print the smaller details, particularly around the windows and front/rear panels.

I also modelled a basic interior since the windows are large enough that an empty shell looked a bit strange.
I’ve decided not to 3D print the running gear. I’ll use ready-made bogies and metal wheelsets instead. At this scale I’d rather have reliable running gear than force everything to be printed.
Still a few adjustments to make, but the car itself is getting pretty close.

"Corner" building N Scale printed in 2022 on my old Bibo printer

I printed the "Corner" building in 2022 on my old Bibo printer. I usually print walls flat on the print bed and then paint and assemble. To achieve a curved wall, I printed the whole facade as one piece with "lofts" over windows and doors.

Art Deco Office Building in N Scale

From the 1910s to the 1940s, Art Deco captured the imaginations of Architects and the public. The famous Cincinnati Union Terminal, the inspiration for the Justice League headquarters in comics, used concrete to create an imposing massive half dome. The Chrysler Building in Manhattan uses aluminum or stainless steel to create a blazing sunburst facade.

Art Deco is typified by symmetry, curves, and "modern" materials like metal, ceramic, and cast concrete. Visual interest is enhanced by Moorish geometrical patterns often featuring sun bursts or chevrons. Aztec and Inca influences were also common.

An Art Deco office building provides visual interest at the front of my N-Track module.

In the 1970s, windows were often partially or completely bricked up in a futile attempt to save energy during the energy crisis. The front facade features aluminum or stainless steel. The brick walls are painted aged white with chips in paint exposing red brick and terracotta underneath. Once proud oversized windows reduced to slits match the pervading theme of the 1970s: malaise, decrepitude, and cultural rot.

World Record T-Track layout at this years NMRA National Convention in Chatanooga TN

My wife took many photos of the T-Track modules: She particularly enjoyed a series of Star Wars themed modules that I'll post separately.
