Accommodative/BVD Issues causing headaches?
Hi everyone, does this sound like binocular vision dysfunction/accommodative issues?
Over the past 5 years I’ve been diagnosed with NDPH and more recently, accommodative insufficiency at an eye test. I’ve increasingly wondered whether a lot of my symptoms are contributed to by my eyes/vision.
Main symptoms/issues:
- pressure/pain around, between and behind the eyes, as well as the back of head/top of neck
- eye strain
- nausea/dizziness (especially with near-focus and objects close to my face)
- visual overload/fatigue
- difficulty tolerating visually busy environments (supermarket shelves, patterns, visual clutter)
- screens are difficult, especially monitors/TV/cinema (phone/tablet slightly easier)
- light sensitivity (both sun and artificial)
Other things I’ve noticed:
- glasses worsen the nausea and pressure, while contacts are slightly easier
- closing one eye can give partial immediate relief (I subconsciously do this a lot when overwhelmed)
- distance/outdoor viewing is generally easier than close indoor environments
- I frequently reread lines and struggle maintaining focus while reading
- I don’t usually get obvious double vision, but focusing feels effortful
Migraine meds have dampened the pain side slightly, but not the visual/sensory symptoms for the most part. I understand both conditions can overlap, so I still intend to continue treatment for that side too (currently Amitriptyline, early phase of Qulipta, Botox round 2).
Does this sound familiar to anyone with convergence/accommodative insufficiency, BVD, etc? I’m considering a private assessment, but it’s pretty expensive, so I’d love to hear whether this sounds relatable to others with similar issues. Thank you! :)
