If you’re trying to meet people in Vancouver….

Lately I’ve been trying workshops / group classes and it’s been so nice. I did a watch making class that I loved but took zero pics :(

Also went to this textured art place and met the sweetest people. The owners are so cute and you can tell they really care about building communit

Tea ceremony at Uji

I hear a lot of people asking where to do a tea ceremony in Japan.

I did mine in Uji and loved it.

It’s a small town right outside Kyoto, known for matcha. You can visit Byōdō-in, walk around the town, try matcha everything, and eat really well.

If you’re already going to Kyoto, I would definitely add Uji to the itinerary.

Stable tech job vs risky self-employed sales business, when do you make the jump?

I’m a (26) female, married, no kids yet. My (28) husband does well financially and is very supportive of me pursuing what I actually enjoy. Technically we could survive off his paycheck alone if needed (it would be very tight financially for a while tho). I’m a recent grad working in tech making around $70k/year. The job is very stable, good team, good company, and I’ve been there for about 3 years now.

But if I’m being real, I hate that my income has almost nothing to do with my effort. I can stay up late, overperform, solve huge problems, learn AI tools, take on extra work… and at the end of the day I’m still just on salary. Meanwhile someone doing the bare minimum still gets paid roughly the same. That mindset is honestly starting to drain me.

At the same time, my family has a background in the travel agency/luxury travel world, and over the last couple years I started doing some side gigs helping people plan trips and experiences. Through family connections and providers, I can get access to really cool experiences and earn commissions from bookings.

The difference is when I hustle there, I actually see the upside. If I put in more effort, network harder, create a better experience, solve problems well, etc….., I can actually make significantly more money! It feels way more motivating to me than corporate tech.

The problem is I’m now hitting the point where I realistically can’t do both anymore. The travel side is growing, but it’s obviously much more unstable (If I don’t land clients in a given month, which realistically it WILL happen, I make nothing that month) and income can fluctuate a lot depending on the client I find.

I genuinely think I’m good and really enjoy sales, relationship building, problem solving, and planning/logistics. Honestly I think those skills fit me more naturally than sitting behind Jira tickets forever lol

But the thing holding me back is the current market. I know how competitive it is right now, and part of me feels like leaving a stable tech role could be a huge mistake. Especially because I know a lot of people would kill for a stable position right now. I have friends that have been looking for jobs for so long and no luck.

Did any of you make a jump from stable employment into a commission/business-heavy career? Do you regret waiting too long? Or regret leaving too early? Should I have a bit more experience in my job before I leave, if so, how long?

Ritz Carlton Tokyo - Mt Fuji view

Fantastic property in an awesome location. The views are a standout, every room gets an incredible one. The Club Lounge was also a highlight and adds great value to the stay.
