Tier-1 MBA + PM at Telecom Giant → 7 Months, Zero Shortlists. What Am I Missing?
Hey everyone,
Need some honest advice from people who’ve successfully switched into strong product companies/startups recently.
Background:
MDI Gurgaon MBA (2024 batch)
Currently working as a Product Manager at a leading telecom company
Working on API products, digital platforms, and network/product strategy initiatives
Want to transition into a more “core product” environment — ideally:
Quick commerce
Fintech
Consumer tech
Or a solid early-stage startup with strong product culture
The issue: I’ve been actively applying for ~7 months now.
I’ve tried:
LinkedIn applications
Referrals
Reaching out to PMs/recruiters/founders
Cold DMs
Resume iterations
Tailoring applications
…but I’ve literally received almost zero shortlists/interview calls.
At this point, I genuinely want to understand:
What are recruiters actually filtering for in PM resumes right now?
Is telecom/domain-heavy PM experience looked down upon by product companies?
What skills/projects make candidates stand out in 2026?
Are companies mainly prioritizing ex-startup PMs now?
What would you do differently if you were in my position?
Would especially love insights from:
Hiring managers
Recruiters
PMs who transitioned from traditional enterprises into startups/tech companies
I’m open to brutal feedback honestly — resume gaps, positioning mistakes, skill gaps, whatever you think might be the issue.
Feels a bit demotivating after months of effort with no signal from the market, so trying to figure out how to course-correct properly instead of blindly applying.
Thanks in advance.
