Year 4 BScN: Placement cancelled last minute, but my extern unit offered to precept. How do I navigate "conflict of interest"?

Hey everyone,

My university just cancelled our Fall placements due to preceptor shortages, pushing back our graduation and dropping my course load enough to threaten my full-time OSAP status.

I work as a Clinical Extern at a local hospital, and an RN on my floor offered to take me on so I can get my hours done this term. The issue is the university's policy prohibiting placements on your employee "home unit" due to conflict of interest.

A coworker and I are asking management if we can transfer our extern roles to different floors so our original unit is eligible for placement, or try pushing the faculty for an exception given the severe shortage.

Has anyone successfully navigated a home unit conflict of interest, or gotten their school to approve an externship placement? Any advice on how to handle the hospital or school politics here would be huge.
