Antiporn?

Life uhh, doesn’t find a way?

Somehow I have made the Dead Sea equivalent of agar plates. When I tell you that I intentionally contaminated this plate last week, what I mean to say is that I literally gave it a wet willy. It still looks completely unconcerned. The specs in this pic are tiny bubbles.

What have I done wrong here?

Recipe:

1000ml water
20g agar
20g lme
1g peptone
2 drops gel food coloring.

Food coloring ingredients (glycerin, sorbitol, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, potassium sorbate, Yellow 5&6, Red 3&40, Blue 1

I did some transfers from store bought plates at the same time. The mycelium is going tomentose all over the transferred puck and not growing into my plate at all.

Edit: Okay, a bit of research and it looks like potassium sorbate from the gel food dye is antifungal… but it doesn’t sound like it is antibacterial so I still don’t get why I don’t see contamination?

Genetics primer?

Howdy.

Wondering if there any primers available online in print that offer a sort of primer on genetics. If so, do folks have a favorite? I have a slight STEM background so I’m not starting from zero but I also don’t need academic level understanding today either.

I’m looking for something that will help me put some handles on the functional aspects of genetics from an amateur mycologist’s perspective. To give an example of recent questions that I would hope the material covers:

- Understanding the germination and combining of spores and how it influences expression in subsequent fruits
- Methods for selecting and breeding for characteristics. Overviews of developing a new strain.
- What does it mean to sector?
- How does cell division weaken the genetics of a line over time? How can a line be stabilized?
- A bunch of stuff that I don’t even know that I don’t know yet

Of course a bunch of this stuff can be googled but flitting around the internet usually lands me on some other unrelated task. Also, I know there are probably forums that cover this but I massively struggle to learn from that context which is why I’m hoping for a single source.

Thanks in advance!
