Original copy of Bible?

I heard a lot of discussion about different translations, but did anyone ever hear the question asked “where is the original bible” and if so how do we know we have the right Bible and are all translations from the same exact Bible?.

Atypical impaired consciousness and LOC while driving

Hello: This is what happened to me a few days ago, I would appreciate any insight, I am a 73 year old research physiologist who knows neurophysiological principles but little knowledge of the clinical situation with these things.

I was driving down a four lane road with a turn lane. I was planning to make a right hand turn in about 0.5 to 1.0 miles (only things I planned to do next, was in either of two lanes, most likely the far right lane). I felt totally normal. The road had moderate traffic.

The first thing I notice was two women outside my vehicle telling me I had to move the car off the road or they would do it for me if I couldn't. The first thing I noticed is I was slumped over the wheel, my foot was firmly pressing the brake, and I was totally aware of what I needed to do, move the vehicle out of the center lane. There was no possibility I had any intention consciously of making a left hand turn, I have no idea why I maneuvered the vehicle in that lane or came to a complete stop, the most remarkable thing to me was the car was in very center of the lane, just like a perfect driver. I drove the car to the next parking lot onthe right and parked the car.

A policeman showed up soon who had been called by the good samaritans that aided me. He ascertained my mental status, told me what had been reported, that I was found slumped over the wheel in the turn lane, asked about my medical status and called EMS who found me to be cognitively stable, basic neurological status normal, glucose 114, blood pressure 158 (I have hypertension that is well controlled my blood pressure is normally 130, but can temporally become elevated in a stressful situation), and pulse 100. I was able to resume normal activities for the rest of the day, stupidly I drove home, the policeman did not tell me not to drive and I hadn't fully appreciated the seriousness of the situation yet.

Several hours after the incident I was at a bookstore sitting on a bench, browsing through a magazine. I noticed at one point I was sitting or somewhat lying on the floor next to the bench. It not seem that I feel but rather seemed liked I had slid down on the floor without a complete loss of control. There were several people around me and no one noticed anything happening to me, so if they saw me probably just thought I had decided to sit on the floor. No preceding symptoms. No confusion when I came to.

So what is remarkable about this event to me is I seemed to be able to maneuver the car effectively, center the car in the turn lane and come to a complete stop, and keep my foot firmly on the brake pedal. I had no trouble understanding what the good samaritans said to me and wanted me to do and no trouble moving the car to a safe location. I felt fine after the incident with no confusion other than what you would expect of someone who had a minute or more of impaired or no consciousness.

I went to my cardiologist who placed me on a Holter monitor to monitor for arrhythmia although he said the incident really seemed to be a neurological problem, but he needed to rule out any transient arrythmias. He is working on getting a neurological visit for me.

Its been five days since then and no further events have occurred, the only medical issue I have is well controlled hypertension, I am just on your basic drugs for hypertension (Arb blocker, low dose amlodipine. I am a quite healthy active individual with no memory or coordination problems.

And I absolutely have totally stopped driving and will only resume driving if cleared by a neurologist.
Would appreciate insights or similar experiences! Thanks in advance.

Crossley's Next Quest for the Historical Jesus?

James Crossley in The Next Quest for the Historical Jesus (The Next Quest, pg 1-14, Eedrman's 2024) makes the argument for a new direction in historical Jesus studies, with a focus away from analyzing the narratives of the gospels with a direction toward understanding the social and cultural circumstances of the times Jesus lived. He states (pg.5) "there is a huge amount of material that has not yet attracted the analysis from historical Jesus scholarship: the archives, (letters, newspapers, pamphlets etc). containing material (scholarly, and popular) relating to the historical Jesus have barely been touched along, exhausted." He proposes, as I understand it, not just looking at the social and cultural circumstances in which Jesus lived, but the overall circumstances of those times from other parts of the world.

Maybe I am missing something, but hasn't this already been studied or have people just so focused on the Gospel narratives that they have neglected this?

NPR this morning on Memphis police shootings?

I was driving and I heard on NPR this morning before 8 am a report of five recent police shootings in Memphis, it was alleging there was a problem, I think they mentioned the Task Force. Did anyone else hear this or know what they were talking about? I was paying attention to driving so I didn't get the details. Thanks!

Church Members going to prison?

Did you have anyone who went to church with you go to prison? I had two, one of my Sunday School teachers was a jeweler and got involved in a theft conspiracy, he went to prison for perjury, went to the so called "country club prison" in Montgomery Alabama, he said it was extremely overrated. Another guy was a air conditioner repairman that knew nothing about repairing air conditioners, he would go to widows houses and say he worked on their air conditioner, then charge a lot of money, all he did was blow compressed air on the coils!

Was the Great Commission actually a teaching of Jesus

I believe Jesus was an apocalyptic prophet who wanted the people of Israel to conform to Jesus law, at least his version of it, and never had any intentions of forming "Christianity". The problem intellectually with this interpretation is the Great Commission where he wanted to convert the whole world (I really doubt Jesus, most likely an illiterate stone mason and carpenter, had any real concept of what the "world" was and had little knowledge of things outside Israel. So I looked this up and this is a summary of what Ehrman says about the Great Commission: Ehrman points out several major historical and textual problems with the passage:

  • Contradictory Post-Resurrection Accounts: The four Gospels offer conflicting stories about Jesus' final instructions. For instance, Matthew places the commissioning in Galilee, whereas Luke places it in Jerusalem and Mark (in its original ending) lacks any post-resurrection appearances. [, 2]
  • Historical Improbability: The historical Jesus was an apocalyptic Jewish prophet who focused his ministry almost exclusively on Israel. Ehrman argues it is highly unlikely Jesus suddenly issued a universal, worldwide mission to all Gentiles right before a Kingdom he believed was arriving imminently.[12]
  • The Trinitarian Formula: Matthew 28:19 commands followers to baptize "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Ehrman notes that this full Trinitarian formula reflects later church orthodoxy rather than the words of the historical Jesus, who never referred to himself as God in the Synoptic Gospels. [12]

What are people's opinions on this?

Empty Skyscrapers in Memphis?

There are quite a few or more than a few skyscrapes/high rise buildings in Memphis that haven't been occupied for decades and I doubt anybody has gone in them. Does anybody know what will happen to these buildings, are there any plans to do anything with them? Who owns them and how can they pay the taxes etc. Does the fire department/building inspectors have to enter them periodically for safety inspections? Thanks, this is just very interesting to me.

Primitive Baptists

I never hear people talk about Primitive Baptists (also called foot-washing, hard shell, anti-missionary and other names). Their worship is very similar to the noninstitutional church of christ. No Sunday School, no instrumental music, no events in the church. They are located almost exclusively in rural areas and there are a lot of them out in the boonies in certain areas. My grandfather was raised in one as was is family before he converted to methodism. I never heard any discussion of it, other than my mother saying they would sit outside the church to watch them clandestinely, like they were some secret society.

Drive Out Tags?

I was almost hit by a swerving car who had a handwritten temporary license plate/driveout tag, the only things visible on the plate were 26 July in large letters handwritten and also I could make out Arkansas was at the top of the plate in very small letters.

I thought the area had improved in this problem area but I seem to be seeing a lot of paper license plates mainly from Mississippi and Arkansas, at least those are the ones I can read. Most have the date fairly visible but the plate number would usually require binoculars to read. Are most of these fake?

Leavened bread for Communion?

Has anyone been to a CoC that used leaven bread for communion?

Have you heard in a sermon the reason for the use of unleavened bread in communion. I know the arguments but I never heard it discussed in the CoC.

Churches in area where I assume 2nd Great Awakening was strong?

My ancestors are from middle Tennessee (slightly west and south of Nashville, Williamson County, now Franklin TN). I have traveled to where they lived in the 19th century. It was a very primitive "Deliverance" type area but is being invaded by Californians now. A town my great grandmother lived in was Centerville TN and it has more CoC's than anywhere I have seen, the town is run by CoC people and almost every church there is CoC. I drove the Natchez Trace Pkwy just south of there and by mistake got on a gravel road that parallels the parkway, Every half mile or less you would see a primitive baptist church (and they had all the names, Hard Shell, Foot Washing, Old School on their signs). These were all very small church which seemed in reasonable state of repair, they weren't falling down, it looked like they were used. I assume having these extreme fundamentalist churches in this area is related both to the poverty in the area and the closeness to the second great awakening event. Does anyone else know anything about the religious history of this area???

Significant events

These are the things I remember happening that were big events: sunday schoolteacher went to prison for a year for perjury, jewelry theft, elders daughter got pregnant out of wedlock, people were pretty sympathetic, there were always stories of preachers complaining about salary and not showing up to work.

Birth control?

Never heard much discussion in CoC concerning Birth Control, even went every week with my mother recently and the topic was never broached. I looked up what the baptist position on birth control was and they seem very opposed to IUD's and Plan B but it isn't a consistent position however it is what AI views as the dominant view. Also there are groups in baptists that think BC should be abandoned and let God decide what size family one should have.

Has anyone heard this discussed in CoC?

knee replacement surgeon

I think I am going to have knee replacement surgery. I am looking for who is considered the best surgeon/surgical team/total treatment team. I am not necessarily looking for who has the most sophisticated technology (such as robotic surgery, smallest incision) but rather who is a very high volume surgeon (who could do the operation in his sleep) and who medical professions regard as the best bet for a good outcome. I am looking more for opinions of what people have heard from medical professionals who have worked with the medical providers and seen results (such as physical therapists, nurses, people who work at medical clinics) vs anecdotal accounts (my brother had a great result with ___).

I have seen both Cockrell and Dabov and liked both, but I would like to optimize my chance for a successful outcome and am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance for your advice/thoughts.

Inerrancy and literalness of scripture?

I always wonder why if the bible has no errors and means exactly what it says—no explanation needed—then why is the wine mentioned in the bible grape juice and not really wine?

Church Chapel surprise!

Funny I have never told anyone else this. There was a party at the church New Years Eve, may have gone somewhere before then and come back then, it was pretty late, can’t remember my age but was probably about 13. It was late and for some reason I looked in the chapel there were a lot of older teenage couples and maybe college students making out, I don’t remember seeing anyone with clothes off, but these people were horizontal position in serious stages of foreplay. I was shocked to see this to say the least.
