Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL ELICOS/AMEP

I’ve been struggling to secure ESL teaching opportunities in Sydney, especially in ELICOS and AMEP settings.

I’m currently completing a Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Macquarie University and have 10+ years of ESL teaching experience overseas, with one year left until graduation.

At the moment, I have a casual ELICOS role at a small college, but the hours are very limited and there’s zero curriculum, so I don’t feel like I’m gaining much professional growth from it.

I’ve been applying for ELICOS positions because they seem more accessible for students than AMEP roles, but I haven’t had much luck hearing back. Many places like TAFE NSW and MTC require post-qualification experience, and TAFE also asks for Cert IV in Training and Assessment, which is a big financial commitment as an international student.

Has anyone here successfully entered the ESL/TESOL industry in Sydney as an international student or recent graduate?

By the way, should I follow the ELICOS (English college) or AMEP (TAFE or MTC FutureReady) path? Which path has more opportunities for ESL teachers?

I’d really appreciate any advice on pathways, networking, or strategies that helped you get your foot in the door.

Thank you!

Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL

I’ve been struggling to secure ESL teaching opportunities in Sydney, especially in ELICOS and AMEP settings. I’m currently studying a Master of Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Macquarie University and have over 10 years of experience in ESL teaching. I have one year left until graduation.

Many workplaces such as TAFE and MTC require at least one year of post-qualification experience. TAFE also requires the Cert IV in Training and Assessment, which is another significant financial investment for international students. I’d absolutely be willing to complete the qualification, but ideally after or during employment rather than before securing a role.

I’ve been applying for ELICOS positions at colleges, but unfortunately haven’t received many responses so far.

Has anyone here successfully entered the ESL/TESOL field in Sydney as an international student or recent graduate?

I’d really appreciate any advice regarding pathways, networking, or strategies that helped you break into the industry.

Thank you so much!

Why is the quality of the chicken at Wollies so inconsistent?

Are The Learner Experience of Unit (LEU) surveys anonymous to lectures?

I just submitted my survey, commenting on how disappointing the unit has been.
Will my lecturer know that the form was sent by me?
The form didn’t require any personal information though.

Does Macquarie University track students’ attendance?
I’m an international student and most of my classes clash with my work hours.
Is it okay if I miss the roll call?
