Reaction of amines with PbO₂ – looking for reliable sources
I'm studying pharmaceutical analysis and came across a qualitative test for amines using lead dioxide (PbO₂), but I can't find clear or detailed information about it anywhere.
Here's what I think I know:
- Aromatic primary amines are oxidized to give colored products
- Tertiary amines don't react, since there's no N-H bond available
My questions:
What is the exact mechanism of this oxidation?
Is the following balanced equation correct for a generic aromatic primary amine? → 2 ArNH₂ + PbO₂ → ArNH–NHAr + Pb(OH)₂
Do you know any reliable sources (textbooks, papers) where this test is described in detail?
Thanks in advance!
