Do recruiting agencies still actively place SDE/software engineers, or is it mostly direct applications now?

I'm a software developer currently exploring new opportunities and wondering how much value recruiting agencies actually add for tech roles.

i am 4 th year undergrad

Specifically curious:

- Do agencies mainly work with FAANG/big tech, or do they place at startups and mid-size companies too?

- What's the best way to approach a recruiter as a dev — cold LinkedIn message, their website, or something else?

- Is there a certain experience level (years / tech stack) where agencies become more useful?

Would love to hear from recruiters who work in tech hiring.
