Just got a potentially terminal diagnosis; how can I sell my home and protect the assets for my spouse?
I’ve been diagnosed with advanced cancer and my spouse and I are moving out of state so I can undergo treatment. (Location: moving from Florida to Tennessee) We are selling our house, which we own outright, and it should bring in about $250k. Since we will be moving into an apartment, we'll have this $250k sitting in cash.
In a best case, I recover and we buy another house in a few years.
Worst case is I pass away in the next few months, and my wife purchases a home after.
I don’t have life insurance, so this money is going to be my wife's nest egg. I want to protect the $250k from tax pitfalls, but also don’t want it to be nickeled and dimed away throughout my sickness.
I have health insurance, and my wife and I are in our 40s.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you’ve made it this far, know that I wish you the very best, and hope you have a day full of life and love and happiness.
