Hey everyone,

I’m currently planning a dream trip to New Zealand and need some serious footwear advice. My itinerary is split into two different vibes, and I’m trying to find one pair of shoes to handle it all.

The Trip:

Part 1: A 3-week thru-hike. Expecting a lot of terrain and weather variations.

Part 2: A few weeks of shorter, max 1-week tracks mixed with general travel.

The Catch:

I need whatever I bring to be highly packable/easy to carry around when I'm not wearing them. Crucially, I’d love something versatile enough that doesn't look completely ridiculous if I wear them to a casual pub or bar in town between hikes.

What's your absolute favorite?

I'm hoping to find the perfect trail running and hiking shoe - Does such a thing even exist?? When it comes to trail running, waterproof shoes are kind of a no-no, while it's considered the golden standard for hiking boots.
Would you go Gore-tex, leather, or fully breathable?

Any help and tested recommendations will be appreciated!

I'm trying to choose a trail running shoe and I'm already confused by all the options out there.

What would you say is the most important thing I should focus on? Is it comfort? Traction? Waterproof? Durability? Brand?

I see a lot of shoes loose their Vibram lugs quite fast and I'm not sure if I'm willing to pay 200$ for a shoe that I'll need to replace after 400 miles or so.
