What else should I be doing?

CFII with 750 hours. Have my MEL (but no MEI) and work at a school that gets me about 60-80 hours a month. I’m under contract though so I can’t leave until early October. Currently saving money to pay off a small loan.

I think a lot about what else I could be doing. For some reason, it feels like I’m not doing enough, and I don’t want to get blindsided later on by realizing I could’ve been doing “xyz”.

I’ve bookmarked some operators I want to apply to when my contract ends, I have airline apps and I’ve put in & update apps for some companies, I’m friendly with the other CFIIs at my school and I keep in touch with old CFI’s I trained with who are now at the airlines, and I shoot the shit with some other people at the airport. Once my loan is paid off I want to see about getting more multi time (I’m at 17, I want to get to 25 for the R-ATP). But I still wonder, what else could I be doing? What are you guys doing while you build hours?

First real camera purchase

Like the title says, I’m looking for my first camera. I had a canon in middle school and an rx100 for a year or so, but I want something with a bigger sensor.

Budget: $450USD, willing to jump to $500USD for a really good deal

Country: USA

Condition: preferably used

Type of Camera: Mirrorless

Intended use: Photography

End use: Social media and small prints. I would like to do commercial work eventually

If photography; what style: I really like low light, street, and landscape photography.

What features do you absolutely need: a screen that tilts up and down. Reliable autofocus

What features would be nice to have: Weather sealing but I’m not too pressed about this

Portability: strap over the shoulders, small bag. Something easy to move around with.

Cameras you're considering: Sony A6000 with a 23mm f/1.8 lens. I feel like the A6000 is capable at that point it really comes down to the lens.

Notes: Im familiar with Sony, I had an rx100 for a while but I dislike how expensive their e-mount system can be. I’ve noticed canon stuff is noticeably cheaper but does it come at a performance tradeoff?
Also, at the end of the day, I know the A6000 is a capable camera. I’ve been wondering if it’s worth getting a budget lens like TTartisan or if I should put down for a viltrox or sigma

Firmware stability

Got an xteink x4 the other day and it’s awesome. But I’ve been hearing a lot about crosspoint and crossink and I’ve been wondering, how stable are there firmwares? Do they ever crash or bug out?

The chapters are displaying a little weird on my xteink and it doesn’t show the prologue and I’d like to fix it, but if firmware is something I have to tinker with every other month or so then idk

Where should I start?

Been wanting to get back into reading with an ereader, but I’ve literally no clue where to start. The last time I heard about an ereader, it was like the first kindle that came out nearly a decade ago. Now there’s kobo and calibre and sideloading and ecosystems and jail breaking.

I’ve been downloading PDF’s and epubs of books I’ve read to my iPad / Apple Books library for the past couple years. I don’t want to get locked into a system, or locked out of a feature (saw a post earlier about how a user wasn’t allowed to download books that weren’t on the kindle store or something).

If you were me, where would you start? What would you get?

What’s something that you still need work on as a CFI?

Not super proud to admit this as a CFI but when going to a new airport with a student I draw out the traffic patterns on my iPad / sectional, partly to show them it’s best to double check and ensure they enter on the correct side, but because, unbeknownst to them, it still trips me up sometimes. I’d confuse left and right pattern a lot during my ppl and cpl and god forbid I’d do it again as a CFI.

Wondering if I’m the only one

What’s this discoloration on my chain?

Been cleaning the chain once every two weeks. Chain cleaner and lube, nothing fancy. When I spot rust, it’s usually bright orange and I scrub it within the next day or so, but I have no clue what this dark discoloration is. It rust? Or just metal doing its thing? Do I need a better chain cleaner?

Been looking for a bag that I can daily as an EDC bag (I have a big load out at the moment) but I can also travel with. Current bag is great for EDC but travel wise is lacking.

I'm between the AER TP3 or TP2, and the Matador GR35. I've had the TP3 small so I know what to expect more or less, but the GR35 seems pretty good.

TP3/2

  • I like the admin panel a lot
  • Dump pocket is great
  • I don't like being married to a clamshell though
    • If the admin panel is loaded out with a lot of stuff, the constantly flapping it over to get in and out gets annoying.
    • finding where the zippers are also gets annoying.

GR35

  • I like the dual access. Clamshell but top opens up for quick access. Just curious how much it opens when more or less packed out
  • I like that it's lighter and seems to be more comfortable
  • I like the front mesh pocket, but idk how I'd feel about it long term
  • I'm a little concerned about water resistance
