Heading to Lakehead for Compressed Nursing — Looking for First-Year Tips!

Hi everyone!

I’ll be starting the Compressed BScN program this fall and would be really grateful for any tips, advice, or pointers from current or past nursing students—especially anything you wish you knew before starting first year.

I’m also trying to get organized ahead of time. Does anyone know the first-year textbook names/editions that are commonly used? If there are legitimate online or library-accessible versions, I’d appreciate knowing where to find them as well.

Also, the designated uniform store currently appears to be out of stock. For anyone who has been through this before, did you have to call the store directly to place an order, or is there another way to get the required uniforms?

Lastly, I’m looking for off-campus housing. If anyone knows of reasonably priced apartments, rooms, or other student-friendly rentals near Lakehead, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or places I should check.

Any advice about courses, studying, labs, clinical preparation, housing, or just surviving first year would be greatly appreciated! 😊

Thanks in advance!

Healthcare Workers of Sudbury: I'd Appreciate Your Advice

Hi everyone,

My husband and I will be relocating to Sudbury this September because I've been accepted into Laurentian University's nursing program. As we're preparing for the move, we're trying to learn more about the local healthcare community and were hoping for some advice from those who live or work in the area.

My husband has been working as a Personal Support Worker in Hamilton for about a year, primarily in long-term care. We've spent the last couple of months researching healthcare employers in Sudbury and have submitted applications to organizations such as Health Sciences North, St. Joseph's Continuing Care Centre, Pioneer Manor, Plan A, Bayshore HealthCare, and several other long-term care and community care providers.

For those familiar with the local healthcare sector, are there any employers that are known to be hiring PSWs regularly, or any organizations that we may have overlooked? We'd also appreciate any insight into the hiring process or suggestions for connecting with healthcare employers in the area.

If anyone is willing to share their experience or offer advice, please feel free to comment below or send me a direct message.
Thank you in advance—we're looking forward to becoming part of the Sudbury community!
