Recs for northern roadtrip

I'm getting really excited about an upcoming trip to Provincial Parks in Northern Ontario. The trip is 9 days / 8 nights and looks like this:

Start point: Kitchener

Chutes: 1 night

Lake Superior: 4 nights

Ivanhoe Lake: 2 nights

Undecided (Grundy Lake or Killbear): 1 night

I haven't been to any of these parks so I'm happy to get any recommendations and general feedback. If you have a hike you love or a must-try bite on the road, a cute coffeshop & trip rest place, etc.

Thank you!

Kashechewan evacuees UPDATE

I saw yesterdays post and started looking into it because I found the whole situation baffling and then found the globe and mail article and thought I would share because the guy's comments were not racist or even bad.. the media just framed them that way for clicks

here it is :

He took issue with how Ottawa and Ontario have handled the evacuations of First Nations, and what he said was a negative impact on tourism.

“The whole evacuee situation with the Indigenous is not being handled properly by the federal and provincial governments,” Mr. Todd told council, adding he believed those levels of government had failed the evacuees.

“We want to be the jewel of tourism in Ontario, and unfortunately, a lot of the residents and people will see Indigenous people on the streets walking around, thinking they’re homeless people from this community, and they’re not. And I think they deserve better. I don’t think children deserve to be playing their recess time in a parking lot beside the casino,” Mr. Todd said to council.

He suggested evacuees be relocated to “some purpose-built kind of facility in the province where they can go and have a sense of community and not be forced to relocate into hotel rooms across the province.”

Mr. Todd recommended the municipality demand the federal and provincial governments reimburse the municipal and regional governments for the costs of hosting the emergency evacuees, including for “enforcement and emergency services, social and public health services, municipal operations.”

National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak of the Assembly of First Nations said in a statement Monday that she was deeply disappointed by the remarks.

“This evacuation is already traumatizing, and many now feel unwelcome in the city that was supposed to be a refuge,” Ms. Woodhouse Nepinak said.

New details revealed about Ontario child’s 2024 rabies death

This story terrified me when it happened. This piece of the article stands out:

--
The 11-year-old boy was at a cottage in northern Ontario in the summer of 2024 and was awoken by a bat lying on his nose and mouth, the case report said.

He swatted the bat away and his father caught it in a pot and released it outside.

The parents didn’t see any scratches or bites on their son’s face and didn’t think the bat had been behaving oddly so they didn’t think of rabies or take him to a doctor at that time.

I'm a big cyclist, and when I met Jeffrey Miller, and heard his story about why he founded "Ontario's most difficult gravel race" (the Voyageur 200) in North Bay, I was surprised that more people didn't know about this race, and what it stands for. So, I wrote about it. Hope it's cool if I share.

Predictions on the Census data for Northern Ontario.

With the 2026 Census now wrapped up I am wondering how the numbers will play out for the North in 2026.

in 2021 the total population was 789,519 with many areas seeing population stagnation or decline, however overall the Region was slightly up from 2016 (780,140).

The only CMA's that saw slight growth were Thunder Bay, North Bay and Greater Sudbury.

Sault St. Marie, Timmins and Kenora all saw decline.

What do we think has happened since 2021? I know there was a huge push in the near north for those moving up from the GTA (~2022/2023) but many of those have have since return home..

I assume we will continue to see the hollowing out of the smallest single tier communities while more people pack up for one of the larger communities or leave the Region entirely.

Tired of being introvert.

38 Sudbury looking to meet some new people and get out of the house more, or even just chat!

I'm into tech, cybersecurity, video games, and generally just shooting the shit over a coffee. Like a lot of people, I've fallen into the routine of work, home, gaming, TV, repeat, and I've realized it's gotten pretty boring.

I'm looking to meet some new people, make some actual friends, and maybe discover some new hobbies or activities along the way.

A bit about me:

  • Work in tech/cybersecurity
  • Gamer (mostly COD and whatever else catches my interest)
  • Enjoy tech projects, cyber labs, and learning random things
  • Cannabis-friendly
  • Good sense of humor and can hold a conversation about pretty much anything

I'm open to pretty much anything at this point:

  • Coffee
  • Trivia nights
  • Bowling
  • Pool
  • Live music
  • Road trips
  • Local events
  • Gaming
  • Exploring new hobbies
  • Or just finding random things to do around town
  • Chatting

Not looking for dating or anything like that. Just looking for genuine friendships and people who are interested in actually hanging out instead of saying "we should get together sometime" and never doing it.

If any of this sounds familiar, shoot me a message and tell me a bit about yourself.
