Moving from Toronto to Fort Frances for one year without a car—what should I pack because it’s difficult to buy locally?

Hi everyone,

I’ll soon be moving from Toronto to Fort Frances for one year for an administrative assistant position. I will not have a car, and I’m planning to bring most of my personal belongings in suitcases rather than move furniture. Since my luggage space will be limited, I want to pack carefully.

I would especially appreciate advice about:

  • Items that are difficult to find locally or considerably more expensive than in Toronto
  • Winter clothing, boots, or accessories that I should purchase before moving
  • Compact household, personal-care, food, electronic, or work-related items worth bringing
  • Things that would help me stay occupied during the long winter, such as indoor hobbies, exercise equipment, books, games, or other activities
  • Indoor recreational or social activities in Fort Frances that are accessible without a car
  • Grocery shopping and other essential errands without a vehicle
  • How reliable Amazon and other online deliveries are in Fort Frances
  • Things I should not waste suitcase space on because they are readily available locally

I would particularly like to hear from people who currently live in Fort Frances or who have moved there from Toronto or another large city.

Thank you!

PGWP expiring—study French at a DLI or continue Express Entry from abroad?

Hello everyone,

My PGWP expires soon. I have lived and worked in Canada for almost five years and already have an active Express Entry profile.

Unfortunately, I did not achieve the French-language score I needed before my permit expiry, so I am preparing to leave Canada and continue studying French from abroad. My goal is to retake the TEF or TCF, update my Express Entry profile, and apply for permanent residence if I receive an invitation.

I am currently comparing two options:

  1. Apply for a study permit for a genuine full-time French-language program at a designated learning institution and continue preparing for the French exam in Canada.
  2. Return to my home country, study French there, retake the exam, and remain in the Express Entry pool from outside Canada.

I understand that admission to a DLI or obtaining a study permit does not automatically lead to an Invitation to Apply.

My questions are:

  • Has anyone received a study permit for full-time French-language study after their PGWP expired?
  • What official requirements should I verify before considering this option?
  • Are there disadvantages to changing from worker status to student status instead of leaving Canada?
  • If I leave Canada, what information must I update in my Express Entry profile, such as my address, country of residence, or employment?
  • Has anyone successfully continued their Express Entry application from abroad after their PGWP expired?

I would appreciate official sources or first-hand experiences from people who faced a similar decision.

Thank you.

Store household belongings for 10-12 months or sell and replace them later?

I’m leaving Toronto after living in Canada for almost five years. I hope to return, but I expect to be away for at least 10 months, and my exact return date is uncertain.

I have approximately studio worth of belongings, including electronics, clothes, kitchen items, and some furniture. I plan to sell or donate bulky, inexpensive furniture. I am specifically deciding whether to store the remaining electronics, personal items, and smaller household belongings.

Renting a 5×5 storage unit or replace the items later.

For an absence of 1 year, is long-term storage financially sensible? For those who stored belongings while living abroad, did rent increases, insurance, transportation costs, moisture, or damage make the total cost significantly higher than expected?

I’m trying to compare the actual long-term storage cost with the cost of replacing these items later.

Leaving Toronto temporarily—should I store, sell, donate, or ship five years’ worth of belongings?

Hello everyone,

I have lived in Toronto for almost five years. My PGWP expires soon, and unfortunately, I did not achieve the French score I needed in time, so I am preparing to leave Canada.

I plan to continue studying French abroad, retake the exam, and continue pursuing permanent residence. I hope to return to Canada, but I do not know how long the process will take.

Over the past five years, I have accumulated furniture, electronics, clothes, kitchen items, and other household belongings. Most of them are still in good condition.

For anyone who has been in a similar situation, which option makes the most financial sense?

  1. Rent a monthly storage unit in Toronto or the GTA
  2. Sell or donate most things and buy them again if I return
  3. Ship them by cargo or courier**.**

If you recommend storage, are there any reasonably priced and reliable storage facilities in Toronto or the GTA?

If donating is the better option, which organizations accept clothes, working electronics, and furniture? Pickup services for larger furniture would be especially helpful.

Has anyone stored their belongings while waiting for PR? How long did you keep them in storage, and was it worth the cost?

Thank you for any advice or personal experiences.

Is it realistic to reach B2/NCLC 7 in all four French skills within 20 days? TEF/TCF Canada advice needed

Hi everyone,

Attached is my TEF Canada result, I have attempted TCF Canada last week and I think it's result will be worse than this if not similar. I am looking for honest advice from people who have prepared for or taken theTEF Canada or TCF Canada exam, especially those who improved their score significantly within a short period.

My Post-Graduation Work Permit expires on August 30, 2026. I also need to give my employer at least two weeks’ notice before leaving Canada, so realistically, I have until approximately August 14 to obtain the result I need and make a final decision.

I am currently planning to book either the TEF Canada or TCF Canada exam around August 4, which gives me approximately 20 days of intensive preparation.

I recently took the TEF Canada exam and received the following results:

  • Reading: B1 / NCLC 4
  • Listening: B1 / NCLC 4
  • Writing: A2 / below NCLC 4
  • Speaking: A2 / below NCLC 4

I will attach a screenshot of my complete results for reference.

I was sick for more than two weeks before the exam and was still unwell on the examination day.

Because my reading and listening were evaluated at B1, I feel that my general French level may be better than the final NCLC scores suggest. However, my productive skills—especially speaking and writing—are clearly much weaker and need urgent improvement.

My required goal is B2/NCLC 7 or higher in all four competencies. Getting B2 in only two or three sections would unfortunately not be enough for my immigration plans.

I understand that moving from my current scores to NCLC 7 in every section within 20 days is extremely ambitious. I am not looking for false reassurance, but I also do not want to give up if there is still a realistic possibility.

I would really appreciate advice from people who have been in a similar situation:

  1. Is it realistically possible to reach B2/NCLC 7 in all four competencies within 20 days?
  2. Has anyone improved from approximately A2–B1 to B2 within a similar time frame?
  3. Should I choose TEF Canada again or TCF Canada?
  4. Which exam is generally more manageable for someone whose reading and listening are stronger than speaking and writing?
  5. How should I divide my seven daily study hours between speaking, writing, listening and reading?
  6. What is the most effective way to improve speaking quickly, particularly for answering unexpected questions and responding to objections?
  7. Would practising alone with recordings be enough, or should I hire a tutor or find a speaking partner for the next 20 days?
  8. Which websites, mock tests, teachers, YouTube channels or study materials helped you the most?
  9. Based on my attached results, which skill appears most realistic to improve and which one may be the greatest obstacle?

I would be grateful for honest, practical and constructive advice, particularly from anyone who has recently taken the TEF Canada or TCF Canada exam.

Thank you very much for reading and for any suggestions you can share.

Good Place to Rent

What is the best place to live (on rent) in GTA if I need to travel to Union Station once a week (with a possibility of increase in office days). I am looking to save money while renting, and want to live in a decent neighbourhood.
The one way commute should be 30-45 mins door to door and stress free, because initially, I will be using public transport. I would be needing a public library or a co-working space and grocery store nearby.
I occasionally go to events like Language exchange. And I am hoping to go to Tech events and start swimming in the near future.

Thank you for your help!

Help required

Does everyone get urges like me or is it because I was exposed to filthy content at early age and that's why this is happening to me?
If I stop PMOing for a few days (It is very difficult to do) I get urges to mas*ate so bad that I cannot think straight. I cannot focus on anything.

Nowadays, I am under a lot of pressure of my exam and work and must study for lots of hours everyday.

I want to know how many times does an average muslim person mas*ate.
As it is considered haram by most scholars (correct me if I'm wrong) , are there people who never mas*ate? How do they do it ?
