Tow truck waited behind building, lifted my car, then charged almost $1,200 to release it

Looking for advice from anyone in Toronto/GTA who has dealt with private towing like this.

Tonight in Brampton, we parked for about 10–15 minutes at a medical office building. The lot was mostly empty. I genuinely did not realize we weren’t allowed to park there.

The towing signs were small and off to one side of the property. There was no sign directly in front of our vehicle, and from where we parked/walked, I did not notice anything clearly warning that we could be towed almost immediately.

When we came back, a tow truck had already lifted our SUV and put it on dollies.

The vehicle had not moved at all.

The tow truck appeared to have been waiting out of sight beside/behind the building, and it felt like they were monitoring the lot and waiting for someone to park.

We were told we could pay:

$600 cash

- no invoice

- no receipt

- no tax

or, if we wanted the proper documented/legal payment with an invoice:

$990 + HST

We ended up paying by e-transfer because they told us they couldn’t process credit cards because the office was closed.

So yes — we paid almost $1,200 just to have our car lowered back down into the exact same parking spot it was already in.

It was never actually towed anywhere.

The invoice we got basically just says:

“Towing — $990”

with no meaningful breakdown.

We were also told that if we didn’t pay right away, the vehicle would be taken to an impound lot in Mississauga and the amount would jump to at least $1,495 + tax, plus possible evening/after-hours fees.

We had our kids with us and were basically being told: pay now or the car leaves and the price goes up.

The driver also told us words to the effect of:

“Good luck fighting this. We’ve towed police officers, firefighters and tons of other people before and nobody had a chance fighting it.”

We later called the property management company. They told us there was no specific complaint or call about our vehicle that night. They said the towing company has a contract with the building and that we would have to deal with the towing company directly.

Meanwhile the invoice says:

“Request by: Property Management.”

We have photos of the whole thing, including:

- the car still in the original parking spot;

- the tow truck;

- the lot;

- the signs;

- the invoice;

- payment proof.

We’re contacting Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation tomorrow because private tow operators are provincially regulated now, and we want them to review:

- the $600 cash/no-receipt offer;

- the $990 + HST charge;

- whether the invoice was properly itemized;

- whether we should have been allowed to pay by credit card;

- whether a full “basic tow” charge applies when the car was never even moved;

- and who actually authorized the tow.

I understand private property is private property. I’m not saying there can never be a tow.

But almost $1,200 for lifting a car and putting it back down without moving it anywhere feels completely outrageous.

Has anyone else in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga or the GTA experienced this?

Did you fight it?

Did MTO help?

Did you get any money back?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are jobs still rolling out RTO in the city from hybrid as of 2026? Is your employer transitioning to full in-office?

New grad just got a position that’s hybrid 2 days work from home, 3 days in office. A big part of the draw of the position was that it’s hybrid. Are these going away in the city and I should expect to be in office 5 days a week in the coming years? What do you all see happening in the coming years?

Dinner options near Cirque du soleil

My family is coming to Toronto to visit me next week and are very thoughtfully taking me to Cirque du soleil. I want to take them somewhere enjoyable for dinner before hand, however, I am struggling to find the right spot.

My family are meat and potatoes people and they don't do well in loud, busy environments. I don't want to end up at a Kelseys or some generic sports bar. I am really hoping to find somewhere cool to take them which will be a special experience that serves burgers and French fries.

Any such suggestions near(ish) the Cirque du soleil tent (Lakeshore - Etobicoke) are appreciated! Even better if there is a patio.

Provident first bill disputable?

Hi all, I got my first utility bill from Provident (and my first in Canada) and I need help from you to know if all of these charges are for me to pay or is it disputable or is it actually the landlord responsibility.

I can't attach the bill but here are the charges for a 2 bedroom condo in with only 2 adults and 1 kid living in it.

Electricity charge $28

Delivery charge $43

Regulatory charge $1.5

Total after rebate and HST $60

Other utilities charges:

Hot water charge $50

Cold water charge $44

Thermal cool charge $36

Delivery charge (other utilities) $19.5

Total $150

HST $19

My total bill is $379 (because there's an account setup fee of $100 and security deposit of $50)

I don't understand what a delivery charge is and is it normal that it's double my electricity consumption?

My lease only says (electricity and water -> tenant) and (heat -> landlord). Air-conditioning is empty and no mention of any other charges.

I think I'm over charged by provident and also I'm not sure if according to the lease I should be paying for Thermal Cool charges, hot water and delivery charge (other utilities) which I don't know what are they.

Horse trail rides near Toronto?

Does anyone have recommendations for horse trail riding services within about a 2-hour drive of Toronto?
I’m an experienced rider and am looking for a long trail ride through nature, rather than a short guided walk around a property. Ideally, I’d love somewhere that allows experienced riders to go out without a guide, but I’m also open to a small guided group if that’s not an option.
Would especially appreciate recommendations from people who have actually ridden there. Thanks!

Finding a personal assistant

I'm in my 40s, retired, and live alone. I'm pretty much a recluse and have been thinking of getting a personal assistant, which is something I never dreamed of doing for my personal life. The catalyst was my health problems and the fact that I live alone. So if something were to happen to me it'd probably be months before anyone noticed. I already have a private chefs who makes my meals and does my grocery shopping. And while this might not be the responsibilities of a typical personal assistant, I wanted someone who can check in on me to make sure I'm still alive and simply help me find people for tasks. For example, an interior designer (I've looking to redecorate and feel overwhelmed by the options), shopping for clothes, or on random projects. For example, I recently decided to catalogue my book collection and while I don't mind doing it myself it's incredibly time intensive.

There was a company in the US that helped find c-suite executive assistants which I used before I retired. Unfortunately, they only work within the US and I haven't been able to find anything similar in Toronto.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and happy to give more details if that would help as well. Thanks.

If you were offered the chance to make a home on Toronto Islands, would you live there?

Houses on the islands are technically leased out by the government but I’m mainly concerned about whether you would WANT to live on the island, or if you feel it would be too restrictive to your life.

No grocery store, one primary school, limited restaurants, tourists. Inconvenient for home improvement/deliveries.

But beautiful views, access to nature, a community.

Do the pros outweigh the cons for you?

Coming from Greece to Toronto for one week in October. What are some interesting stuff I should see based on you locals to cause me a cultural shock? :)

EDIT: Thank you all for your suggestions! Yeah culture shock was a bit too much in the title but even the things you consider normal, for someone else might seem completely different, especially if you're born and raised there. Some friends living in Canada have told me that Toronto will be a blast and I'm looking forward to visiting :)

Visiting on Thanksgiving week

I have booked to see some stuff myself (CN Tower Edge Walk, Hockey HoF, Leafs Game and others), but that's just stuff that you easily think of doing. What would some of you lovely locals would suggest? I'm open to anything. Will stay near the City Hall so I think that's a good point to explore the city.

(Just staying in Toronto for a week, will visit other places in the country before that)

Thanks!

Has Circular Materials been picking up your recycling?

Ever since Circular Materials took over recycling, my cardboard hasn’t been picked up on two occasions along with many of my neighbours. When I submitted a complaint I was told cardboard boxes need to be flattened, which they have been both times. Wondering if this is happening anywhere else since this private company took over?

More specifically there is a photo repeated on several columns which look normal til you notice the decapitated/floating head of a slightly blurry Asian child.

7 Hour Trial Shift?

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing well today.

I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now, and landed two trial shifts at two different places.

One was today at a cafe, the other is tomorrow at a gelato place. My trial shift at the cafe today was pretty standard, 3 hours paid.

However, my trial shift tomorrow is looking a little strange. they want me to come in from 4-11 pm. I’ve never heard of a seven hour trial shift before. is this sketchy? they’re a pretty popular establishment so i’m not to sure if this is out of the blue or if i’ve just never had to do a trial shift of this length before. it’s likely paid, but i haven’t asked because i do not want to look rude lol.

Has anyone else had long trial shifts like this? did you end up staying the full 7 hours?

Experience moving from Vancouver > Toronto?

I'm hoping to hear from folks from Vancouver who have moved to Toronto, particularly those who enjoy the outdoors:

  • What led you to move (work, relationship, etc.)?
  • How have you found Toronto vs. Vancouver (in any sense, just looking for overall impressions & experience)?
  • Are you happy with the decision and did you stay in Toronto?

Asking as I'm contemplating the move and there's potential I could be in TO for 5+ years. Not much of a city guy, which is why I'm currently in Vancouver. I'm an avid mountain biker and skier, and enjoy most outdoor activities (e.g., open water swimming, canoeing, XC skiing, etc.).

I'm concerned about the long cold winter and proximity to the outdoors as it seems like you have to drive quite a ways out of the city to get to good recreational opportunities (though I know there's supposed to be some riding at Don Valley in the city).

You hear about lots of outdoor enthusiasts moving from Toronto to Vancouver and loving it, but not so much the other way around. Hoping to hear some firsthand experience - thanks in advance!

Support groups for survivors of Childhood abuse in Toronto

As the title says, I'm just really curious if there's anything like this in Toronto. I grew up rough and under extreme circumstances, my experiences eat away at me and I know I've reached the time to let it out, let it go.

I've thoroughly searched Google and I don't see any programs, there we're two but they don't welcome males.

Any help would be great, point me in the right direction.

Also I tried therapy for a year, though my benefits covered me completely the idea of paying someone to hear my problems never really worked for me, they can never relate that path didn't work

Staying at Sick Kids with a toddler

I am from Hamilton and I am having a baby next month who will need to stay at Sick Kids for a few weeks after birth.

I am hoping there are people who can offer advice or share experiences of how they navigated this with a toddler at home.

We are hoping for a space at RMH but with a toddler at home we just struggle to picture the realities of daycare, travek back and forth, how to manage child care, so any advice would be so appreciated.
