Am I the only one hoping they shift the TV series to a contemporary time period?

For the books I kind of get it because, even though the first book was set 6 years before it was published, the books were being written in the early and mid-nineties.

The movies I kind of got it; they were trying to be faithful to the books.

But what’s stopping the new series from changing the time period to a more contemporary time period? I think that would make the story way more interesting.

Wizards are always borrowing technology from muggles - clocks, brooms, fireplaces, trains, radios, newspapers, toilets. I’d be interested to see what enchantments they can do with a modern smartphone.

Updating the time period would connect more with the present-day audience too. Of course Hogwarts can still be a bit Victorian, but that will just add to the joy of HP when he arrives for the first time.

Pro: it would make mistakes like Dudley’s Playstation a non-issue.

Con: it would mean that HP’s mum and dad would be born in 1995 which feels weird.

Question about DVP

Hey - sorry if this has aleady been asked and answered. I did a check and didnt find anything.

The lyrics of DVP say:

>I'm driving fast to get away
Doing 180 on the Don Valley Parkway

Because the line before says they are driving fast, I used to think that they were doing 180 km/hr on the highway, but the more I thought about it, the less I thought this was realistic. Is it possible they mean doing a 180 degree turn on the DVP?

EDIT: I did some more digging and discovered it actually is 180***°*** turn. wiiild

I’m wondering if the series will take liberties with the first few seasons

First, assuming there is more than one season.

In my view, the early books are pretty well adapted into the movies. I wonder if the series will change/add more to the first two stories to flesh them out.

Obviously I think it’d be a fun episode to portray the handoff of Norbert as a heist story, but other than that, there’s not much missing from the first two books I’m excited to see on screen. I hope this makes sense.

Why don’t they serve electrolyte drinks at restaurants?

Seems like a no brainer to me. The big brands are owned by coca-cola and Pepsi so I know that restaurants have deals with these brands.

EDIT: I’m talking more about fancy sit-down restaurants. Why won’t they sell a small bottle of Gatorade or whatever if they can sell me a coke in a fancy glass bottle??

Anyone else think it's possible Sarah lied?

A few stray thoughts:

First of all, we never have any confirmation that what Sarah told Bear is true, specifically that Nikki told her that she sees him as a little brother. It's possible that she told this to Bear in an effort to get him to break up with her... maybe because she sees how the relationship is destroying Nikki. Remember how insistent she was that Bear meet up with her in the middle of the night? I think she was desperately trying to save Nikki's life from Bear's destruction.

So this got me thinking... we actually never see her art or anything like that. Is it possible she also made up art school in an effort to get Bear to empathise with her? I remember her acceptance letter looking a little fishy. I don't see how she could have got into art school without a portfolio, so I doubt she was accepted anywhere.

My theory:

  1. Her goal was to break up Bear and Nikki to save Nikki

  2. She got her dad to make the fake letter

  3. After the terror at Ian's party, she knew it was now or never, so she demanded Bear meet her in the middle of the night

  4. She was nervous about lying so did a bit of weed in the car before Bear arrived

  5. She lied that Nikki friend-zoned Bear to plant doubts about the relationship

  6. She gave Bear the fake art school letter to get him to empathise with her, so he could feel a rush of positive emotions for her

  7. If not for the brick scene, she may have tried to kiss Bear while in the car

  8. She planned to use this kiss to break up him and Nikki (not realising that Nikki is dangerous)

What’s the longest line in Toronto that you’ve *voluntarily* waited through?

“Voluntarily” is there to do a lot of heavy lifting - removing things like airport security, maybe even Service Ontario (well… maybe not… like why were you there?)

Think: “Could you turn around without losing anything.”

What’s coming to mind for me is Bar Ape on a summer evening when a close aunt was visiting.

Annoying interaction with a police officer today

I was cycling home near World Cup celebrations this afternoon (Wellington W at Strachan). Traffic had stopped and the signal was flashing red and the intersection was being controlled by police officers.

I stopped at the intersection and signalled my right-hand turn.

The police officer controlling traffic stood in the middle of the road:

“Pedestrians, go!! Go!!!”

She began to stare directly at me:

“Pedestrians!! Go!!! That means bikes!!”

I flashed her the peace sign before completing my turn.

Is Palmerston as good as Shaw now??

I’m a huge Shaw-head. I’ve mainlined the Kool-Aid since my first ride down Shaw. It’s beautiful, safe, nice grade and plenty to look at. I plan routes using Shaw all the time.

My destination today was a block off of Palmerston so I carried a bit further west down Bloor and turned South on Palmerston. And it was nice??

I’ve avoided it in the past due to lengthy road work and have pretty well ignored it since the priority was added (sticking to Brunswick, and my true love, Shaw).

I wondered if other people feel the same. Do I just have a wandering eye? Am I only interested in newer, hotter roads? Help me please!

EDIT:

I commuted using Palmerston/Tecumseth this morning (day after my original post) and wanted to report my findings.

Positives:

  1. Wider than Shaw in many places

  2. Grander trees due to a deeper property setback

  3. Tecumseth St. south of Queen is better than Shaw south of Queen

Drawbacks:

  1. Dedicated bike signals are synched with the traffic lights, not the advanced pedestrian signal

  2. Other light timing seems overlong (College, Dundas)

Anyway I’m glad to have another good street in my toolkit. The more the better!

Toronto: Anyone here going to the surprise concert at The Drake this Wednesday?

Looks like he’s doing an intimate show as part of NXNE. I missed Friday’s show due to travel but I got tix to this one as soon as I saw his post about it.

I’m beyond excited. One of my first concert memories is seeing a secret “Stars” show that my friend’s sister heard about on MySpace. I was like ten and it was my favourite band and it was so meaningful to see them at a small venue. I cherish that memory.

Now, BBNO$ is among my favourite artists ever. I’m literally buzzing thinking about it. Can’t believe I got a ticket!!

Are babies in Ontario eligible for accessible parking permits based on a literal reading of the law?

Please read this first: I am not advocating for this, nor do I think it’s a good idea. I am merely confused by the wording of the law that seems overly broad.

From the website:

https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-accessible-parking-permit

**Eligibility**

To apply for an accessible parking permit, your regulated healthcare practitioner must certify that you have one or more of the following conditions which limits your mobility:

- cannot walk without a brace, cane, crutch, lower limb prosthetic device or similar assistive device or requires the assistance of a wheelchair or the assistance of another individual

Do you play more conservatively if you make back-to-back unlucky calls?

Let’s say you made a dubious call (but not a bad call), and it failed. The next hand is dealt and you order up again and fail again.

Are you more likely to pass if the NEXT hand is also a dubious call? Or do you never adjust your play style?

Let’s assume score isn’t really a factor. i.e. it’s now 5-4 for you.

And let’s assume your partner is a complete stranger.

RANT Horrible signage re: FIFA closures

Garrison Crossing’s south bridge is closed for two and a half months due to the FIFA fan fest taking place at Fork York/Garrison Common/the Bentway.

The city has put up these signs which do not explain what is closed. The sign claims that “Garrison Road” is closed, but that street only exists south of the bridge! I’m not crossing the bridge to access Fleet Street so when I read it, I don’t assume my route is affected.

After a week, the city put up a map attempting to guide lost people, but it’s incredibly small and still very confusing.

Isn’t wayfinding somebody at the city’s job? Why are we putting up with this? Why is a security guard being paid to sit on the bridge on his/her phone from morning to evening?

Am I missing something here? This stool looks like a piece of junk!

Found online but seems like a joke to me. Is this actually valuable? Seller seems reputable.

I’m a bit parasocial in my life… but only with people I know, like acquaintances. I think a lot more about them then they do of me.

But with bbno$, I feel I have a healthy level of respect for him, as an artist and entertainer. Like obviously I know more about him than he does of me… but I don’t try and pretend it’s anything more than fan—artist.

I think he invites healthy boundaries.

Curious if I’m the only one?
