Across Northern Ontario, getting in to see a doctor, nurse practitioner, or specialist often takes weeks—or even months. When you finally get that 10- or 15-minute appointment, it is easy to feel rushed, get overwhelmed, or realize on the drive home that you forgot to ask your most important question.

NorWest Community Health Centres is hosting a free, 90-minute virtual session this Thursday, August 20 from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM EDT (12:00 PM – 1:30 PM CDT) called Getting the Most from Your Healthcare Appointment.

The goal is to give you practical, straightforward tools to take control of your visits and make every minute count:

  • Before your visit: How to prioritize your top 2–3 concerns and organize your symptoms so nothing gets missed.
  • During your visit: Practical communication tips to ensure you are heard, ask for plain-language explanations, and partner effectively with your provider.
  • After your visit: Leaving with clarity on your next steps, prescriptions, diagnostic tests, or follow-ups.

If you or a loved one are navigating life during or after cancer treatment, there is a free support resource running right here in Thunder Bay.

I am the Manager of the Northwest Self-Management Program (under NorWest CHC), and I will be personally facilitating our upcoming Cancer: Thriving and Surviving workshop series. We meet for the next 5 Thursdays at 5:00 PM at the Mary J.L. Black Library.

Originally developed at Stanford University, this evidence-based program is highly practical. It is a supportive, confidential space for both patients and family caregivers to learn how to manage treatment fatigue, deal with stress and "scan-xiety," improve nutrition, and confidently navigate the healthcare system.

Just sharing a resource for anyone in Northwestern Ontario managing a long-term health condition. NorWest Community Health Centres is delivering a virtual 6-week workshop starting tomorrow, May 5, from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

This is the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. It is designed to help people build a toolkit for daily life, covering topics like managing fatigue, healthy eating, and improving communication with your healthcare provider.

The program is fully funded by the province, so there is no fee to join. We also provide a grocery voucher to participants who finish the full series as a way to support their nutrition goals.

Since the first session is tomorrow morning, the best way to sign up is to call the program manager, myself, directly.
