Story time about my 2016 s1000 purchase
So I found this deal on Marketplace and ended up picking her up anyway.
I get to the meetup spot and the guy already has the bike loaded in his truck. First thing I’m thinking is, “Uh… what’s up with that?” He said he had brought it to another buyer earlier and the deal fell through. Weird, but whatever.
I’m checking the bike over and ask if we can start it up. It’s still loaded in the truck at this point. He fires it up, everything sounds good, starts fine, no weird noises. So we unload it and I go to start it again so I can take it for a spin and make sure I like how it feels… nothing. Bike won’t start, and the screen isn’t even turning on.
He goes, “Oh, it might just be out of gas.”
Bro… be serious. Clearly not the issue.
At this point I’m already thinking the whole situation feels sketchy, but he really wanted the bike gone and suggested we load it back up and drive to a gas station to see if it would run. I agreed.
On the way there, somehow the straps come loose and I’m sitting there thinking, “Yeah, this has to be a sign.” The whole thing just felt cursed at that point.
Since the bike was basically dead, he asked if I’d still want it for $4k. I countered with $3.5k because literally nothing was turning on at the time. He hesitated but agreed. We keep messing with it trying to figure out what’s wrong and still can’t get anything.
Then while we’re readjusting the straps, the front forks compress a little and suddenly the headlights come on. Now I’ve got hope again.
He asks if I still want to try taking it to the gas station. I’m like, “Man… I guess.”
We get there, and while I’m on the phone, he realizes the kickstand was down and the bike was still in first gear. He gets it started, and suddenly the price jumps back up to $7k. I ended up getting him down to $6.5k.
I honestly didn’t know the screen wouldn’t even turn on in that situation. I ride a 2020 CBR650R, and on that bike the dash still powers on it just won’t start unless you pull the clutch. I assumed the S1K would be similar.
Now I’m lowkey upset I didn’t just gamble the $3.5k and take it home when it looked dead. Part of me feels like I lost out after talking myself back up to $6.5k, but at the same time if the bike’s solid maybe it was still worth it. Curious what y’all think did I get a decent deal or sell myself?
