I've been studying Japanese for a while now with no particular goal in mind, it just became a bit of an obsession. I'm around n3 level, working towards n2, and I can pretty comfortably read kid's manga without reaching for the dictionary, and more advanced stuff with it. Is it a good idea to work towards eventually developing the skills for part-time Jp>En translation work? I don't think I'll ever become truly "fluent" since I don't plan on moving to Japan, but hopefully I can reach a sufficient level for more low-profile work like doujinshi, just to make some extra cash in my free time. What other skills would I need to work on aside from raw language skills?

I'm no expert in Japanese, but to my ears, it sounds like everyone in the show speaks in a pretty "standard" Tokyo dialect, except Kate who speaks in a Kyoto dialect. I could be wrong, but I definitely hear her using the "ya" copula verb a lot. This seems odd to me, considering we just learned that she's probably the only person in the cast who's not a Kyoto native. It's not unheard of for anime to ignore dialects sometime, Kyoani themselves did it with Hibike! Euphonium (everyone but Kumiko spoke in a Kyoto dialect in the novels, but in the anime none of them do), but this seems like a very intentional decision. So, why do you think this is? And does anyone know if it's like that in the novels?

Looking for some gift ideas for my dad. He is a lifelong hippie, he's into the grateful dead, punk bands like the Butthole Surfers and Ween, and pretty much any kind of weird art. He does occasional oil painting, but mostly draws on his ipad in procreate (my brother is already getting him some digital brushes - can't do that). He's also really into tech, watches lots of movies, and loves our cats. In the past I got him a mug with cats drawn by various artists throughout history on it and that was a hit.
