Most emotional surprise gift idea you've pulled off

I am not looking for anything specific here just genuinely curious what people have done that actually got a real reaction out of someone instead of the polite "oh thank you" you usually get with gifts. I feel like most gift advice online is the same five ideas recycled jewelry, a trip, a nice dinner and none of it really moves the needle emotionally the way Ive heard some people describe pulling off. Would love to hear actual stories, doesnt have to be recent just something that stuck with you because of how the person reacted.

What’s a good gift for a brother who likes random gifts?

My brother is into random gifts and he's started getting into watches over the past year and has started building a small collection. I wanted to get him something related to that for his birthday but picking a watch feels risky since everyone seems to have their own taste with brands and styles . I’ve looked at watch boxes and accessories but most of them feel a little boring for a gift. I was thinking maybe I should just get him a watch and take the chance or find something watch related that feels a bit more fun.

Anyone here into watches and have an idea of what you’d actually want someone to get you?

White coat ceremony

Friday is my absolute best friend’s white coat ceremony.

I need unique gift ideas to make her some sort of basket - things I can get at Walmart preferably!

I’m already thinking of a candle with a sticker that says “smells like a white coat” and some energy drinks!

Together we are moms to young ones, new homeowners, mid 20s, and she’s the most fun and hilarious person you could possibly imagine.

Amongst all the chaos in her life she shows up for me and my family over over and over again, I need this to be good. 🫶🏼

Dino gift for 6 yo

I'm at a loss for a gift for my nephews 6th birthday. I asked him what he wanted and he said "dinosaurs- just anything with dinosaurs". However my SIL and BIL have been working hard to clear clutter out of their house and I really don't want to give another toy that will just fill the space back in. I'm likely going to get him a year of the ranger rick Dino magazines, but would like something else for him to open as well. Here's some more info:

A budget of ~$40-$50
He's into sports and STEM
He's an only child, so things that need more kids can be hard
I'm mildly crafty, so some DIY is workable

Chinese/American engagement gift suggestions

I would like to gift my friend (Chinese f, early 30s) an engagement gift to congratulate her on her recent engagement to an American man! Are there any suggestions? She and I (American, f) have been friends for about 7 years now. I want to congratulate her without being offensive.

Gift idea for new friends birthday

Hello everyone- my newish (2-3month) friend is turning 30 this weekend and I want to get her a good gift but I haven’t been around long enough to have a notes app going.
Here’s her hobbies:
- sour dough baking
- cross stitch
- musicals (phantom of opera, she made me watch moulin rouge)
- Disney
- she is very cool and stylish so I don’t want to get any clothes or decor for fear of missing the mark

I was thinking maybe some fancy butter for one of her loaves? Is that lame (lol see what I did there)?

She mentioned before how her last birthday was a flop so I would really like to make her feel seen.

Thanks for the help and ideas <3

Need gift ideas for parents in their 60s who have everything and buy whatever they want

my parents just buy whatever they want the second they want it so birthdays and anniversaries are an absolute nightmare in our house. I really wany to get them something sentimental this year but not in a tacky or cheesy way. They also completely hate clutter so any physical trinkets or decor that just sit on a shelf collecting dust are definitely out of the question. What are some actually good meaningful gift ideas for people who truely need and want nothing

Gift idea for someone who loves being outdoors?

A friend of mine spends most weekends outside - hiking, camping, or just exploring new places. I’d like to get them something useful without giving them another piece of gear they may already own.

For anyone who loves the outdoors, what’s a gift you received that you actually ended up using?

Basketball players: What gift would you actually want for your birthday?

Hello! My fiance recently got back into playing basketball, and his birthday is coming up soon. I have absolutely zero knowledge about the sport, so I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a good gift for him! I already got him a pair of Lebrons, so I’d love to hear any other ideas you might have.

UPDATE:

Thank you, everyone for the suggestions!

I really appreciate it. I ended up ordering three pairs of shoes for him
:) 2 LeBron XXIII pairs and a Way of Wade 14. He’s still using his old basketball shoes, so I thought it was time for an upgrade. I’m also planning to go to the store to look at some socks and shirts. For Christmas, I’ll probably get him the ball, bag, and some of the other recommended items.

Gift help for a girl I’ve been seeing?

I’ve been talking with her for about half a month but we’ve been friends for longer and she’s invited me to her birthday party but I don’t know what to get her. I got some ideas but I don’t know if it might be too little or too much? I’m thinking of making her an eternal bouquet and some bracelet charms since she said she wanted some but Im just overthinking too much and worrying.

My best friend is turning 19 and I’m making her a little birthday project 💌

My best friend is turning 19, and I had this idea to make her a notebook filled with 19 little messages from people from different parts of the world.
I thought it would be really special for her to read advice, a funny story, a life lesson, or simply a birthday wish from someone she has never met. 🥹❤️

My boyfriend is turning 23 and has rejected literally every gift idea I have 😭 Please help

For context, my boyfriend is turning 23, and I’m completely stuck on what to get him.

I’ve gifted him clothes, bracelets, etc. in the past, but this year feels a little more special because I’ve started earning and I haven’t really gotten him anything since I got my job. So I wanted to get him something really nice this time.

Here’s where I’m at:

  • I initially thought of AirPods because he recently lost his, but he said he doesn’t want them because Apple is apparently releasing a new version next month.
  • Then I considered Nike sneakers. Nope. He doesn’t want those either.
  • Years ago, he mentioned wanting Marshall headphones, so I thought I could finally get those. Also rejected. 😭
  • I remembered he once wanted black boots. Asked him again. Nope.
  • I KNOW he loves perfumes, but I have absolutely no idea what kind of fragrances he likes, and I’m terrified of spending a lot on something he won’t actually wear.

Basically, I have somehow managed to eliminate every single gift category. 😭

And his birthday is in TWO DAYS, so at this point, online shopping is pretty much out and I’ll probably have to buy something from an offline store.

I’d really appreciate some ideas for something that feels special/nice and not like a generic boyfriend gift. Budget is flexible since I’m finally earning, but obviously I don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount just for the sake of it.

Also, if perfume is actually a good idea, please tell me which fragrances are generally well-loved by guys in their early 20s or how I can secretly figure out what he’d like without making it obvious. 😂

He is into photography, cricket, travel. He is currently doing his mbbs. He loves perfumes

PLEASE SAVE ME. I have two days. 😭 FYI - budget around 15k rupees. That's around 160 US dollars

Gift for my sister’s 40th bday

I’m looking for a gift for my sister for her big 4-0. We’re 6 years apart (I’m younger), and pretty close. She’s hard to buy for. She does very well as a concert promoter and has no kids so she doesn’t want for anything. She likes music, travel, exercise/hiking, and is pretty health conscious. I thought about it maybe something sentimental. Pictures of us over years in some sort of display.

How do you land on a gift your partner will actually love instead of defaulting to generic?

i keep running into the same wall. birthday or anniversary comes up, i want to get my partner something they'll genuinely love, and i end up defaulting to the safe generic thing because i drew a blank under pressure. it's not that i don't care, it's that i'm trying to think of the perfect idea the night before with zero bandwidth left.

the thing that's helped me a little is keeping a running note of stuff they mention offhand through the year, hobbies they've picked up, a brand they like, something they said they'd been meaning to buy for themselves. by the time the date comes around i've usually got two or three real leads instead of staring at amazon at 11pm.

but i want to get better at it. for the people who consistently nail gifts:

- do you keep a list going year-round, or do you just remember?

- how do you pull ideas out of their interests without asking outright and ruining the surprise?

- what's your move when they say "i don't want anything"?

curious how the thoughtful gift-givers here actually do it, because the generic-default trap keeps getting me.

Teachers day gift ideas

Hi!! Senior year of high school. We wanna go all out for teachers day, obviously not too over board but yk decorate the classroom and all.

We have ten teachers and we have yet to decide gifts for them

We will be giving them the classic pen, a nice handmade card, rose

But we wanna give them something that they will never throw away

(Ps: don't suggest photos, we are giving those too)

As teachers, what are some affordable stuff you'd want to be gifted

What birthday gift should I get my mom?

Basically, my mom is in her very early 40s, and my brothers and I are going 3 ways on some concert tickets for her birthday. But I don’t feel like that’s quite enough for how much she does for us, so I wanted to get her something else on top of that. My budget is around $60.
She really likes skincare and makeup, but as a guy, I know absolutely nothing about that stuff, and I also have no idea what she already has. Is there anything in that category that you guys would recommend that would make a good gift without needing to know exactly what products she already uses?
And if skincare/makeup is a bad idea, what else would you recommend? I’m honestly so lost lol.
