Hey everyone, I know I literally just posted about the "Gold for Gas" SUV scam I ran into while walking my dog, but I also wanted to share a second situation I saw in the area. I'm hoping this helps someone else avoid a massive headache.
There is a group of 3–4 women who loiter in the parking lot of the Sunny Food Mart plaza (14th Ave and Markham Rd).
They wait for drivers to start pulling out of their parking spots, and then one of them will suddenly step right in front of the car to pretend they’ve been hit. They say they "got hit" and claim injury.
Then others in the group act as "witnesses," swarming your car to pressure you into paying them cash immediately to settle it without police. And they can get aggressive if you refuse. If you tell them you are calling the police. They try to snatch the phone out of your hands to stop you calling 911
They’ve been know to do it in the Home Depot parking across the street too.
EDIT: I now know this is a scam where the jewelry is fake and they use the "stranded traveler" story to target helpful pedestrians.
[PSA] Attempted "Gold for Gas" Scam in Boxgrove - White SUV
Hi everyone, I wanted to share a suspicious incident that happened to me this morning while walking my dog in the Boxgrove neighborhood.
A white SUV with two men inside pulled up right next to me at the sidewalk. They claimed they were from Montreal and were lost, asking for directions to the nearest gas station. They then told me they were out of gas and asked for cash, offering me a "gold watch" in exchange.
I kept my distance and told them I didn't have any cash and wasn't interested. After about 30–40 seconds of trying to pressure me, they realized I wasn't budging, looked at each other, and sped off.
Suspect Description:
• Vehicle: White SUV
• Occupants: Two men with light complexions, black hair, and Middle Eastern accents.
