I mean we kinda do but not really which is weird because it reflects upon our basic governing unit: the barangay.

we can reasonably lean into balangay, sea based theme tourism/nationbuilding campaign by making lgus make a city balangay regatta, colors, revival of ancient designs, rowers, include exotic costumes and festivals and market the philippines as a balangay, bangka capital of the world, and not just for foreign tourism but also for cultural revivalism to market the filipino metethnic identity as a maritime nation - essentially narrative building - praising not just ofws but specifically sea farers, shipbuilders, fishermen.

We are literally a maritime nation for thousands of years. Every single one of our loadbearing issues depends on the sea. From the west philippine sea to our literal economy and surviving storms from our punishing surrounding waters. We have more claim to maritime identity than even Hawaii whose identity only lives in a museum rather thna ours which is lived and alive.

What if just like Edo Japan, modern Philippines banned all foreign thought (under penalty of execution), immigration and emmigration and Mactan, BGC or Correigdor became our Dejima island (the island in Japan which became the only place the shogunate allowed foreigners to come in and trade).

Do you think this will cause an era of cultural melding and homogenization (ala Japan) that the Philippines didnt grt to have? Do you think this will further collapse the country?
