Another day, another PTS colour.

This time it’s British Racing Green, and this one comes with a little more racing history than most.

It’s a deep, understated green that can show hints of blue and grey depending on the light. Elegant rather than flashy, but put it on the right Porsche and it still has plenty of presence.

The story behind the name goes back to the Gordon Bennett Cup in the early 1900s. Britain’s Selwyn Edge won the 1902 race in a green Napier, and because the following race was held in Ireland in 1903, the British team chose shamrock green as a nod to their Irish hosts. That green gradually evolved into the many shades we now associate with British Racing Green.
And interestingly, there has never really been one single, officially defined shade of British Racing Green. It’s more of a family of deep racing greens.

Porsche has embraced the name for its own Paint to Sample palette, and it looks particularly good on modern GT cars. A 911 GT3 RS in British Racing Green is a pretty convincing reminder that racing heritage doesn’t always have to come in red.

Not every fast colour needs to shout.

The Reddit response to these PTS posts has been great, while my Instagram is still playing catch-up. If you want to see a new Porsche colour every day and follow the database as it grows, ptsfiles is where I’m posting them all.

Shiraz Red Metallic… the Audi colour that found its way into Porsche’s PTS catalogue

I went down another Porsche colour rabbit hole, and this one came with a bit of a plot twist.
Shiraz Red Metallic is one of those colours that looks very Porsche at first glance, but it actually started life somewhere else.
It’s a deep, dark red with a subtle wine and maroon character. Depending on the light, the metallic flake brings out different shades, making it feel much more restrained than a typical bright Porsche red.
The interesting part is that Shiraz Red Metallic was originally an Audi colour. Audi used the paint code LY4S, while Porsche uses Y4S. It later found its way into Porsche’s Paint to Sample catalogue, where it has appeared on models including the Cayenne.
And the name is pretty fitting. Shiraz is a grape used for rich red wines, and this colour definitely has some of that character. Deep, saturated and just a little bit mysterious.
I love these little crossover stories in the Porsche colour catalogue. You think you’re looking at a Porsche colour, and then you discover there’s an Audi hiding somewhere in its past.
I’ve been documenting these kinds of Porsche colours and their stories over on Instagram at ptsfiles, with a new colour posted every day. If you’re enjoying these colour deep dives, you might want to take a look there too.

In the US, Signal Yellow used to be nicknamed the "Skittles color"

I’ve been working on a little project documenting Porsche’s Paint to Sample colors (PTSfiles) ,one shade at a time, and thought this one might be interesting to fellow Porsche nerds.

Signal Yellow is a proper flower power era classic. It first appeared on the 911 and 912 in 1966 and has remained one of those instantly recognizable Porsche colors.
It was part of Porsche’s move toward richer and more adventurous colors in the late 60s and early 70s, and interestingly, it’s still available today through Paint to Sample.

One of my favorite little details: in the US, Signal Yellow was affectionately known as the “Skittles color.” Until 1973, Porsche actually used four different internal paint codes for it before eventually standardizing the color.

I’m slowly building a database of these colors, including their history, paint codes and little bits of trivia. I’m documenting the whole thing on Instagram as I go.
If there are any other Porsche color nerds here who enjoy this kind of stuff, feel free to check it out. And if you spot anything I’ve got wrong or have additional information, I’d genuinely love to hear it.
