On Combat: The Broad Strokes + Weapon Damage Calculators
A (kind-of) brief and (very) incomplete overview and history of combat in Dungeons and Dragons and adjacent games (Including Worlds Without Number).
I also made some damage calculators for each game I covered, so it might help GM's and the game design oriented out.
What's the highest damage you can get in base 2e using a weapon?
I'm doing a comparison of weapon damage through the editions and running into 2e, I'm really struggling. Highest I could find was:
Hammer of Thunderbolts +5 (rolling 9 points of damage on dice) + 12 from Girdle of Giant Strength + Gauntlets of Ogre Power +6 + (Debatably a strength bonus of +14. It's unclear to me with the wording of my edition whether the Strength bonus of the girdle stacks with your strength bonus or replaces. I could be persuaded either way.) for a total of 32-46.
Anyone got higher?
Edit: Using a single attack.
A Review/Appendix N for The Hungry Gods. TLDR it's fantastic.
A critical examination of Stronghold design and Domain play throughout the various editions of Dungeons and Dragons.
