Rejected after SIFT. Looking for advice on picking myself up and trying again

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately I received the email today that my Apprentice Applications Operations Engineer job application was rejected. I only scored a 2 on the SIFT for my personal statement and thus my employment history and everything else wasn't assessed.

I'm bummed about it, as I was very interested in the role and the career path. As a job it would be better pay and better security than what I am doing currently. I have had work experience with HMRC in high school and always fancied going down the route of the Civil Service.

My work situation is no longer tenable, I have an interview booked for a local job as an admin worker.

How can I make the most out of the next few months and position myself for future apprenticeships with the DWP / HMRC? Ideally tech related.

Will it look wrong on a CV to have taken another job between now and then and maybe in 8 months time be applying for more roles with the DWP?

Thanks!

Is a stop-gap job a bad idea?

Hi everyone, I'll try to keep this short.

My current job has become unbearable and I am looking to leave for a new career. I am looking for apprenticeships so I can retrain myself in a new field. Some apprenticeships pay significantly more than my current role too. I work in a sales role too and despite everything, it does look great on paper and has provided great experience for other roles.

I feel I may need to get out sooner rather than later as I have been threatened with redundancy. My redundancy pay wouldn't last long (circa £2000) and I am more concerned about how long it would take to find a replacement job as I know it's hell out there.

I may have a chance to take a simple job locally.

Is it a bad idea to take a stopgap job, to give myself breathing room and train and apply for a new career role? Does it invalidate my experience in my current role, is it seen as a "step back" or "suspicious" on a CV?

Thank you.

Looking for a new career path, interested in driving HGV's "Wagons" as we call them. Would appreciate some advice!

Hi everyone, I'm new to the subreddit and I hope questions about the career and lifestyle are allowed here.

I want to employ some brevity here as I know we're all busy. I'm 22 and currently a national sales rep, so very used to driving. Been in the role for 18 months now and got the car license for this job specifically. Now done around 50,000 miles in the work van alone not counting my own car and motorbikes.

My mate is 3 months older than me and lost his job the other year, he used some government funded scheme to get into driving wagons and absolutely loves it. He is working nights for a firm here in the North East and is making a KILLING. (Reckons around £52,000). Has all of his ADR stuff and his class 1 now as he very quickly went up the ranks and was agency now working full time for a firm.

I'm interested in a change as the job isn't working out. I'm used to driving, don't exactly LOVE it, but used to it.

I will admit that I am nervous of driving something huge and heavy. My main fears are getting stuck in a tight single track lane or residential area / busy town with loads of people and parked cars everywhere. I don't like making mistakes, especially if it is with something that could hurt or kill someone or cause some damage. We're a small country with some silly roads and turns and junctions.

I'd say I'm a competent and confident driver, but my concern would be other idiots as I know people seem to have less patience for HGV's. Cyclists and HGV's would be a concern for me too.

I've found a firm that offers "experience days" driving HVG's near Carlisle. Is this a good shout to get a first "lesson" of sorts before committing.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with the family, mates and I am a student actor. So I would like to know my hours and have some degree of flexibility. Is this possible within an Agency? My folks are old and I am the "breadwinner" in the house so I want a good income but also the ability to enjoy it and spend time with them in the evenings and weekends. (Part of the reason why rep work has run its course for me).

Am I able to go directly for class 1? Or do I need to start at the bottom and work up to it (not a problem at all, just want to understand the license structure properly).

Once I have the license, where do I go to get work? Most firms seem to want experience, so do I join an agency as my mate did?

I'd ask him but right now he will be going to his depot to set off down to Birmingham!

Thank you all so much.

Working on the Falkland Islands

Hello everyone, I'm new to the subreddit.

I live in England and I'm looking for my next career.

The Falkland islands are a place that have captivated me since high school. I've been planning a trip for a while and trying to persuade a friend of mine to join me.

I'm curious to know about work opportunities and long term residency. It's absolutely beautiful and I'm someone who can function very well when in remote areas. My current career is in National Sales so I am familiar with extended period away and being completely by myself for most of the days.

My interests are in nature and conservation, digital technology and the petroleum sector interests me too. I'm also pursuing a Private Pilot License as I feel this could be a great benefit to isolated living and working conditions.

Would you have any advice on opportunities, and career paths. How is the job market over there and are there any areas that are understaffed?

Thank you so much!

Wanting to move into software engineering from sales. Interested but concerned about the future.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this reddit.

I currently work in a sales job but I am very interested in software engineering, development and coding.

In the past, I worked in logistics and I built my own app to compare shipping options, which I was going to trial with my employer. This has given me the idea to go down that route career wise.

The UK government has been hiring "digital apprentices" with the main branches. HMRC, DWP, DEFRA (I believe) and so many others. The army has digital security roles too which sound interesting.

I've applied for some apprenticeships, but I am concerned about getting into this line of work then finding myself redundant in a few years time due to AI.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get into this line of work from no official experience and a basic high school education (GCSE level 5 in everything which translates to a C in the US). 6 years working experience and 3 jobs all within the same employer.

Then once into the industry, how do I keep myself relevant and protect myself? Move into AI development or AI related work?

Thank you for any advice!

Work opportunities for a Brit 22 - Is FIFO what it's cracked up to be

Hi all, new here.

Keeping it short. My life in the UK is shit and a joke and I want out - and fast.

I know it's an insult to have anyone coming into your country and looking for work. But I'm curious and looking towards anything with growth and some sense of balls about it. Sales doesn't scratch the itch for me anymore. I want to blow things up or drill holes or build stuff.

Friend and I were talking about leaving this shithole and he mentioned the FIFO stuff you see online. I don't use tiktok or facebook as they're bollocks. But anyone happy to give some advice to a lad who just wants to go back to enjoying his life and making a couple of quid for his labour?

Cheers!

I often think that the changes in Minecraft design reflect real life trends in interior and exterior design

Hi All, just joined this subreddit as I started playing around 2012 and have never stopped. Even during the "dark ages" around 2017 I think they were.

I love seeing old photos of the solid lime wool carpets and paintings on every wall.

I think the changes in design to the more modern "YouTube tutorial builds" we see are similar to how we evolved in real life.

In the 1970s in England we had Avacado Bathrooms and Artex coated ceilings. In 2012 minecraft we had solid wool wall to wall floors and cobblestone walls and glowstone everywhere. This is the Minecraft equivalent of the "tacky 1970s"

In my house on my realm I'm actually in the process of adding a "2011 Wing" to it with all of these old features. It looks great so far!

Thanks!

Potential Interview in September - Can I use notes?

Hi everyone.

I have applied for a digital apprenticeship and if I'm offered a virtual interview it would be in September.

I have been working for one company since I left highschool, so I have only ever had one job interview and it was very straightforward and simple. I've been there for 6 years.

Can I bring notes to the video interview to help me remember important points to bring up? Is this frowned upon or not permitted.

Is there anything I should be aware of for this kind of interview, will they expect any demonstrations of my digital skills or tests?

I know they like the STAR method so I want to memorise how to talk in that way for it.

I'm very interested in this role and want to get it.

Thanks

Designs for a Trading Hall & Villager Breeder - Can these be in the same vicinity?

Building is loosely based on the Eden Theater in Lisbon

Hi All,

I demolished my old trading hall as I never used it and it was in an ugly small building.

My villager breeder was 150 blocks away and too time consuming to bring in replacements.

I have began building a new place to be my trading hall. Can someone suggest a design and layout and if I can have a breeder in house either underground or above in a tower?

Thanks!

What should my next farm be?

This is the farming district near our village.

Long farm is the wool farm, small one in the middle is the chicken & feathers farm, square farm is the wheat farm and the big building is the storage room.

We have an area in the desert 2000 blocks away with the "ugly" farms. (Gold farms, iron farms etc)

I'm struggling to think of the next farm to build. I like this area as I can afk in the chicken farm and the other two are running too

American Trade Jobs, What do you guys do?

Hi all,

I'm over in England and looking for a career change.

I left school and worked in a warehouse for four years. I gave up physical graft to become a salesman and to be honest I feel a longing for the graft again.

I'm looking at carpentry, previously looked into electrician work but it's a 5 year entry and they're so underappreciated here in the UK. Also, my mate is doing it and already suffering from sciatica!

When I hear Americans talk about "the shop", what are you guys up to for work? You seem to all drive big trucks fully kitted out. Over here the lads use ford transits full of rubbish.

I know it's a generalisation, and not to believe everything on social media & youtube. But I like the look of the American blue collar worklife.

Any suggestions?

I miss physical work and would love to know what opportunities are in / around Newcastle

Hi all,

I've been working since leaving school 6 years ago. I'm in sales now and it's great, job is enjoyable enough and the pay is decent.

I find myself longing for physical work again, and have considered trades such as electrician and carpenter.

I have a friend who is a landscape gardener and I have considered asking him about helping out if he fancies just to give me a taste for it.

Is there any pro-bono work I could do on the weekends and see if I'm useful enough to pursue something full time? I'm down for anything, full car license can travel anywhere.

Experienced on tools and basic skills in bricklaying and patch plastering.

I miss hands on graft, being physically tired not mentally - seeing a job done. No corporate bullshit KPI and OTE. I like seeing the results and knowing I did something. Replaced the knackered light in the bathroom and still get a sense of pride every time it turns on.

Cheers.
