Hi everyone,

I know this topic probably won’t make me many friends, but I’d still be interested to hear what my fellow Swiss think about it.

This is about vegan alternatives to animal products.

I’m not vegan myself, but I try to reduce my meat consumption to a minimum. It has been shown that a vegan diet is more sustainable. On the one hand, there is the environmental aspect: meat production requires significantly more water and agricultural land. On the other hand, there is the ethical aspect. In my view, no animal wants to be killed, and many of us probably wouldn’t eat meat if we had to slaughter the calf or cow ourselves. Even if an animal has had a good life, I don’t think that necessarily justifies killing it for food, when you have alternatives.

Nowadays, we have alternatives, and they are widely available. Almost every supermarket offers vegan products that can replace meat, and these alternatives are getting better and better. In some dishes, you can barely notice the difference anymore. So why kill an animal if I can simply use a vegan substitute instead? For me, the same applies to milk and other animal products.

What I mainly want to discuss, however, is the fact that we spend a significant amount of money every year subsidizing our farmers and the agricultural sector. Organizations such as Schweizer Fleisch or Swissmilk promote the continued consumption of animal products. The meat we buy at discount supermarkets is cheaper partly because agriculture is supported through our taxes.

At the same time, a product like Planted, for example, is relatively expensive in supermarkets, even though producing it involves much less animal suffering and requires less land and water.

So my question is: Wouldn’t it make sense to subsidize these vegan alternatives as well, while reducing subsidies that support meat production and consumption? From my perspective, this would make sense on several levels and could encourage many people to eat less meat. If Planted were significantly cheaper than meat, I think quite a few people would reconsider what they buy.

What do you think?

TL;DR: Why do we use tax money to subsidize meat production and consumption, while barely subsidizing vegan alternatives? From an environmental and ethical perspective, that doesn’t make much sense to me.

Eine Frage

Und zwar haben sich ja gefühlt alle Preise auf der Welt irgendwie langsam aneinander angeglichen. Früher konnte man in China irgendwo in einer Jugendherberge für einen Euro in der Nacht schlafen und das Essen war 50 Cent.

Natürlich gibt es immer noch starke Unterschiede auf der Welt wie teuer etwas ist, jedoch haben sich diese Beträge stark aneinander angeglichen. Ein Hotel kostet heute gefühlt überall min. 100€ in der Nacht.

Die Löhne sind aber je nach Land niemals so stark angestiegen. Irgendwie geht das doch alles nicht mehr auf? Wie soll das funktionieren wenn auf der Welt irgendwie gleich teuer ist? Für gewisse Menschen in Niedriglohnländern muss ja alles unfassbar teuer geworden sein. Oder ist das jetzt einfach eine neue Welt? Ich checks nicht.

Bitte einmal aufklären wo das hinführt Danke.

Ich sehe immer mal wieder Videos von eurem CEO, in denen er erwähnt, dass die Schweizer 200 Stunden im Jahr mehr arbeiten als die Deutschen. Er bringt diesen Vergleich, um zu sagen, dass das möglich ist, wenn man es will und sich ein bisschen anstrengt.

Ich muss sagen, dass mich diese Aussage als Schweizer stört.

In der Schweiz ist die persönliche Identifikation mit dem Job sehr stark. Wenn man jemanden kennenlernt, dreht sich das Gespräch sehr schnell um den Beruf und den sozialen Status. Viel zu arbeiten gilt bei vielen Menschen in der Schweiz auch heute noch als Tugend und wird auch im Arbeitsumfeld von Vorgesetzten oft gerne gesehen. Das erzeugt einen Druck, dass viel Arbeit grundsätzlich gut sei. Es ist ein Narrativ, an das viele glauben, von dem am Ende aber nur wenige wirklich profitieren.

Natürlich verdient man gut. Das Leben hier ist aber auch deutlich teurer. Die Kosten für Miete, Krankenkasse, Arztrechnungen, Lebensmittel usw. fressen einen grossen Teil des Einkommens wieder auf. Haben wir am Ende mehr Geld zur Verfügung? Vermutlich ja. Aber wir haben auch weniger Zeit und Energie, es zu geniessen.

Bei einer 42-Stunden-Woche bleibt wenig Zeit für sich selbst, die Familie und die persönliche Entwicklung. Viele Menschen haben nach der Arbeit nicht mehr die Energie, noch etwas zu unternehmen. An Sonntagen sind die Städte hier fast ausgestorben, weil viele schon genervt sind, dass sie am nächsten Tag wieder arbeiten müssen. Es ist üblich, dass man unbezahlt bis zu 45 Stunden pro Woche arbeitet. Der gesetzliche Rahmen ermöglicht das. In vielen Firmen wird jedoch kaum kontrolliert, wie viele Überstunden tatsächlich geleistet werden, sodass viele Menschen noch deutlich mehr arbeiten.

Ich kann daher nicht nachvollziehen, dass euer CEO uns immer als Paradebeispiel anführt. Aus meiner Sicht ist weniger Arbeit eine soziale Errungenschaft, die wir den Gewerkschaften zu verdanken haben. Das Versprechen des Kapitalismus ist doch, dass er zu weniger Armut und mehr Wohlstand führt. Weniger Arbeit ist für mich daher eine logische Schlussfolgerung, wenn mehr Wohlstand vorhanden ist. Andernfalls geht für mich das ganze Konzept nicht auf.

Kein Mensch arbeitet gerne 45 Stunden pro Woche, bis er tot umfällt.

Auch kein Schweizer.

With all the rising costs I was wondering if your salaries or the salaries in your field of profession are stagnating or rising.

I have the feeling that even in Zurich salaries can’t keep up with all the costs and it gets harder and harder to find a good paying job in Zurich. My boss told me when I asked for a raise that salaries in Zurich will go down in the following years.

Does this apply to you and your field of profession aswell?

Why do we accept that homeownership has become out of reach for so many people in Switzerland?

Switzerland is often described as a nation of renters. Around two-thirds of the population rents their home, and this is generally seen as completely normal.

At the same time, in many other countries, buying a home is considered the single most important step toward building long-term wealth. Instead of paying rent indefinitely, homeowners gradually build equity, eventually own their home outright, and often benefit from rising property values.

In Switzerland, however, that path seems increasingly closed off. Even people with above-average incomes often struggle to save enough for the required down payment or find a property they can realistically afford.

That raises a question for me: if renting means paying someone else’s mortgage for decades, and homeownership is one of the most effective ways to build wealth, how is the average person in Switzerland supposed to accumulate wealth over time?

Should the government do more to make owner-occupied housing accessible? For example:

• Encourage first-time homebuyers?
• Reconsider the strict down payment and financing rules?
• Increase the supply of land and speed up planning approvals?
• Or is homeownership simply a luxury in Switzerland that most people should stop expecting?

I’m genuinely curious how people see this. Is the Swiss model sustainable in the long run, or are we moving toward a society where wealth is increasingly inherited rather than built?

Has anyone ever tried to evade the high curreny conversion feeds (1%) from Swissquote?
