Exterior paint color

Hi there!

Our Spanish style California bungalow needs to be repainted.

How should we decide on the color scheme? Currently, light yellow base with dark green trim.

Do we look at the adjacent houses to see what "fits" with the neighborhood?

Also, most likely we will sell the house in the next 2-5 years.

Field guides with dichotomous key for Southern California

Hi there, plant people,

I am looking for good field guides for SoCal that I can take when hiking. (Not Jepson)

Specifically for Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura counties.

Thanks!

Insects and blooms this late in the season?

Am seeking to improve my macro photography skills, and am looking this weekend for LA or OC adjacent sites with native blooms and insects. Willing to drive.

Happy trails! :-)

Sonoran Spotted Whiptail [Orange County, California]

Looks like Sonoran and a wiki entry suggests the natural range is AZ and NM.

Is there a naturalized population of the Sonoran Spotted Whiptail in So Cal? Or what other identification makes more sense.

(A 2nd, kinda crummy photo shows that this lizard does not have an orange throat so I did not think it is the Beldings Orange Throated Whiptail.)

ELI5 American chestnut blight

Why haven't scientific advances allowed the majestic American Chestnut tree to withstand the blight that eliminated this once plentiful tree?

Before the blight (early 1900s) the American Chestnut dominated the eastern forests, and its lumber has highly valued for furniture and it's fruit was an important foodstuff for animals and humans.

European and Asian chestnuts are blight resistant. Seems science could enable the American Chestnut to flourish once again.
