Gatekeeping knowledge or skills at work

You see this a lot in the trades but I’m sure it applies to other careers. There’s always that older guy who hates to see a new guy learn how to do their job. They’re always watching them work, just hoping they get in a situation where they don’t know what to do. Instead of teaching or helping them they just get mad or take over. I don’t know if they’re scared of being replaced or they don’t want the new guy finding out a certain skill they’re proud of isn’t as difficult as it looks or what.

I really think this is one of the biggest reasons there’s a high turn over rate in construction. There really isn’t anything in the trades that the average person couldn’t learn how to do but NOBODY learns these skills by themselves. They’ve been developed and passed down over thousands of years and we have to keep passing them on.

The kitten under my porch

There’s been a kitten living under my porch who was born in the cold winter and was eventually abandoned by its mom. I feed it every day though I wouldn’t call it a pet. It is friends with a big black cat in the area and they are usually together. Last night I heard an adult cat fighting something outside. This morning the big black cat had a nasty wound on its face and the kitten is no where to be seen. I put some scraps out for the kitten as usual but it never showed up. The big black cat who is usually afraid of me came up to the porch by itself meowing at me. I’m really worried I know exactly what the cat was trying to tell me.
