Hi everyone,

I recently took the WAIS-IV using Spanish norms and I’d like some help interpreting the profile. I’m not looking for a diagnosis, just a better understanding of what the pattern might mean.

Background/context:

  • Age: 25
  • I had been sleeping poorly for several days before the test.
  • A few months before the WAIS-IV, I had done some online IQ-style tests with matrices/sequences, so I’m wondering whether that could have affected my Matrix Reasoning score.

Composite scores:

  • VCI / Verbal Comprehension: 141 — 99.7th percentile
  • PRI / Perceptual Reasoning: 119 — 90th percentile
  • WMI / Working Memory: 127 — 96th percentile
  • PSI / Processing Speed: 108 — 70th percentile
  • FSIQ: 133 — 99th percentile

The report says the FSIQ should be interpreted with caution because there is a 33-point gap between the highest index, VCI 141, and the lowest index, PSI 108.

Subtest scaled scores:

Verbal Comprehension

  • Similarities: 19
  • Vocabulary: 18
  • Information: 14

Perceptual Reasoning

  • Block Design: 10
  • Matrix Reasoning: 18
  • Visual Puzzles: 11

Working Memory

  • Digit Span: 13
  • Arithmetic: 17

Processing Speed

  • Symbol Search: 9
  • Coding: 14

Additional processing details:

  • Digit Span Forward: scaled 15
  • Digit Span Backward: scaled 10
  • Digit Span Sequencing: scaled 12
  • Forward span: 8
  • Backward span: 5
  • Sequencing span: 7
  • Block Design without time bonus: scaled 8

One thing I’m unsure about is the Verbal Comprehension score. Subjectively, the verbal subtests felt easier than I expected, and I have the impression that many people I know could get similar results. Is this just a subjective impression due to my background/social circle, are very high VCI scores relatively common among educated people?

My questions:

  1. How would you interpret this profile overall?
  2. Could previous exposure to online matrices/sequences tests have inflated Matrix Reasoning significantly?
  3. Could poor sleep mainly affect Processing Speed, Symbol Search, Digit Span Backward, or timed visuospatial tasks?
  4. Is VCI be strongly inflated by education, reading, or cultural background?
  5. Is there anything in this profile that is commonly seen with attention issues, or is that too much to infer from WAIS-IV alone?
  6. Based on this profile, are there any academic or professional fields that would likely fit my cognitive strengths better? For example, would this pattern be more compatible with fields requiring verbal/conceptual reasoning, abstract analysis, mathematics, engineering, law, research, programming, etc., or is it too much to infer from WAIS-IV alone?

Again, I’m not asking for a clinical diagnosis. I’m just trying to understand what conclusions are reasonable from this pattern and what would be overreach.

Thanks.
