Power Rangers: Bio-Strike | S1E1: "Patient Zero"
When a pulsating purple spore mutates a campus maintenance worker into a rampaging monster, an exhausted biology student must unexpectedly step up to survive. Using experimental technology from a secret subterranean lab, Zach Dawson transforms into a Power Ranger to save his friend and capture the beast before the fungal infection can spread.
TITLE: POWER RANGERS BIO-STRIKE
EPISODE: 01 - "PATIENT ZERO"
TEASER
INT. THE VIVARIUM - NIGHT
Darkness. The hum of high-powered cooling fans.
We are in a subterranean lab that looks more like a server room crossbred with a terrarium. Cables run along the floor, pulsing with faint blue light.
Standing at the main console is DR. JULIAN ERICKSON (35). He wears a lab coat with the sleeves rolled up. He hasn’t slept in days.
He stares at a massive HOLOGRAPHIC MAP of the city.
A SECTOR near the University is blinking rapidly. RED.
COMPUTER VOICE
> Bio-Sign detected. Sector 6. Spore Count: Critical.
Erickson slams his fist on the desk.
ERICKSON
> Not yet... we’re not ready.
He turns to the back wall.
The DECK WALL.
Five metallic slots. Five colored lights.
BLUE is LOCKED.
YELLOW is LOCKED.
GREEN is LOCKED.
WHITE is LOCKED.
Only the RED slot is humming. It pulses with a rhythmic, anxious beat.
Erickson walks over to it. He hesitates, his hand hovering over the keypad.
ERICKSON
(To the empty room)
> I hope you’re hungry.
He punches in a code.
CLACK-HISS.
The Red Slot opens. A metallic DECK BOX slides out. Erickson grabs it. It looks heavy. Cold.
INT. SEWER TUNNELS - NIGHT
Drip. Drip. Drip.
A flashlight beam cuts through the steam. A CITY WORKER is wading through ankle-deep water, checking pipes.
WORKER
> Dispatch, I’m at the junction. Smells like... rotting fruit down here.
The beam sweeps the wall.
The Worker freezes.
The walls aren’t concrete anymore. They are covered in a thick, pulsating carpet of PURPLE MOLD. Veins of glowing violet light run through the slime.
WORKER
> Dispatch? You seeing this?
The mold TWITCHES.
A burst of SPORES explodes from the wall, engulfing the worker. He screams, dropping the flashlight.
The flashlight falls into the water. In the darkness, something inhuman HISSES.
ACT ONE
INT. LECTURE HALL - DAY
Boring. So boring.
PROFESSOR GABLE (60s, monotone) is droning on in front of a whiteboard covered in complex biological diagrams.
PROFESSOR GABLE
> ...and thus, the survival rate of the Hymenopus coronatus depends entirely on its ability to remain unseen.
IN THE BACK ROW:
ZACH DAWSON (20) is slumped in his chair. Hoodie up. Eyes closed. Fast asleep.
Next to him, HARPER MURRAY (20) is awake, but he’s not taking notes. He’s recording Zach on his phone, trying to suppress a giggle.
PROFESSOR GABLE
> Mr. Dawson?
Zach doesn’t move. Harper nudges him with a pen. Hard.
HARPER
(Whispering)
> Dude. You’re up.
Zach jolts awake. He wipes a bit of drool from his chin. He blinks, trying to focus on the room. Everyone is staring at him.
ZACH
> Present.
PROFESSOR GABLE
> Nice of you to join us, Zach. Perhaps you can explain to the class why the Orchid Mantis is a poor hunter?
Zach rubs his eyes. He glances at the diagram on the board.
ZACH
> It’s not.
PROFESSOR GABLE
> Excuse me?
ZACH
> It’s not a poor hunter. It’s an ambush predator. It mimics the flower to lure pollinators. It doesn’t chase prey because it knows the prey will come to it. It’s efficient.
Zach yawns, pulling his hood back up.
ZACH
> Can I go back to sleep now?
Professor Gable makes a sour face. The class snickers.
EXT. CAMPUS QUAD - MOMENTS LATER
Zach and Harper walk through the busy campus. Zach looks exhausted, clutching a coffee cup like a lifeline.
HARPER
> "It’s an ambush predator." Classic. You’re gonna be a meme by lunch, bro. Check the views on the blog.
Harper shoves his phone in Zach’s face. The screen shows a blog titled: THE HIVE MIND: TRUTH IS BUZZING.
ZACH
> Harper, no one reads your conspiracy blog.
HARPER
> It’s not a conspiracy if it’s true! There are bugs in the system, Zach. Literally. Government surveillance beetles. I saw one yesterday.
Zach stops. He looks down at the sidewalk.
A small, iridescent GREEN BEETLE is crawling perilously close to the path of a jogging student.
Zach crouches down. He gently lets the beetle crawl onto his finger, then moves it safely into a nearby hedge.
ZACH
(To the beetle)
> Stay in the grass, buddy. It’s a jungle out here.
HARPER
> See? You’re obsessed with them. You’re practically one of them.
ZACH
> I’m late for work study. Catch you later, harp.
Zach peels off, heading toward the large glass structure at the edge of campus.
INT. UNIVERSITY GREENHOUSE - DAY
The air changes instantly. It’s warm, humid, and smells of wet earth and jasmine.
Zach walks in, his shoulders visibly dropping an inch. This is his safe space.
KATIE WALTERS (20) is standing on a ladder, misting a hanging row of Ferns. She wears oversized overalls and has a smudge of potting soil on her nose.
KATIE
> You look terrible.
ZACH
> Good morning to you too.
KATIE
> Another all-nighter? Or is Dr. Erickson working you to death in the basement again?
ZACH
> (lying)
> Soil samples. Very intense soil samples.
Katie climbs down the ladder. She pulls a granola bar from her pocket and tosses it to him.
KATIE
> Eat. You’re skinny enough as it is.
ZACH
> You’re a lifesaver.
KATIE
> Hey, can you look at something for me? South vents.
She leads him to the back corner of the greenhouse.
The ventilation grate is covered in a patch of FUZZY PURPLE MOLD.
KATIE
> I scrubbed this yesterday. It grew back in four hours. And look...
She picks up a trowel and taps the grate.
The mold PULSES. It ripples like a muscle flexing.
ZACH
> That’s... not normal fungus.
KATIE
> I called Maintenance. They should be here any—
CLANG.
The back doors burst open. A MAINTENANCE WORKER walks in, wearing a heavy-duty backpack leaf blower/mulcher. He looks annoyed.
WORKER
> Who called about the mold?
KATIE
> Over here! Be careful, it’s—
WORKER
> Yeah, yeah. Stand back. I’m gonna blast it.
The Worker revs the gas-powered blower. VROOOM.
ZACH
> Wait! Don’t—
The Worker points the nozzle at the mold and pulls the trigger. A jet of air hits the purple slime.
SCREEEEEECH!
The sound isn't mechanical. It’s a piercing, biological shriek.
The mold LASHES OUT. Thick purple tendrils shoot from the vent, wrapping around the nozzle of the blower.
WORKER
> What the—?!
The tendrils move fast. They snake up the machine, fusing into the metal. The plastic casing melts and bubbles, turning into organic armor.
The Worker screams as the infection hits his hazmat suit. He convulses.
FX: The Man and the Machine MERGE.
His limbs elongate. The leaf blower nozzle fuses into his chest, becoming a massive cannon. His head disappears inside a fungal shell.
He is no longer a man. He is the MULCHOR.
MULCHOR
(Voice distorted, bubbling)
> Puuuurge... the... greeeen...
The Monster raises its arm-cannon. The turbine in its chest spins up with a sickening wet sound.
ZACH
> Katie! Get down!
Zach tackles Katie behind a concrete planter just as—
BOOM!
A blast of concentrated SPORE SLUDGE obliterates the spot where they were standing.
FADE OUT.
ACT TWO
INT. THE GREENHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
SMOKE and SPORES fill the air.
The MULCH-MONSTER stomps forward. Its heavy boots crack the tile floor. It swings its arm-cannon, knocking over a rack of clay pots. CRASH.
MULCHOR
> Consumption... beginning.
ZACH is crouched behind the concrete planter, holding KATIE tight. She’s coughing, covering her mouth with her sleeve.
ZACH
(Whispering)
> The back door is blocked. We have to go through the service corridor.
KATIE
> Zach, what is that thing? It ate Mr. Henderson!
ZACH
> Don’t look at it. On my count. One... two... GO!
Zach grabs a bag of fertilizer and HURLS it at the monster.
POOF. The bag explodes against the Monster’s chest, creating a dust cloud.
MULCHOR
> Irritant detected.
Zach and Katie sprint toward the "EMPLOYEES ONLY" door.
The Monster spins its turbine. WHIRRRR. It fires a glob of sludge.
It misses them but splashes against the doorframe, sizzling like acid.
INT. BASEMENT CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
They burst into the dimly lit hallway. Pipes hiss overhead.
ZACH
> Go! Get to the fire alarm in the lobby!
KATIE
> I’m not leaving you!
ZACH
> I’ll draw it away! Go!
Zach shoves her toward the stairs leading UP. He turns and runs DOWN, deeper into the basement.
KATIE
> Zach!!
INT. LOWER BASEMENT - MOMENTS LATER
Zach sprints down the dead-end corridor. He stops at a wall covered in terrariums. He frantically feels under the shelves for a latch.
BOOM.
The door at the end of the hall flies off its hinges. The Mulch-Monster squeezes its bulk into the narrow hallway. It fills the space completely.
MULCHOR
> Nowhere... to run... little organic.
Zach backs up against the wall. He has nowhere to go.
ZACH
> Come on, Doc... pick up...
The Monster raises its cannon. The barrel glows purple.
Suddenly, the wall behind Zach HISSES.
A section of the shelving slides back. A hand shoots out, grabs Zach by the collar, and yanks him into the darkness.
ZAP!
The Monster’s blast hits the space where Zach just was, scorching the concrete. The secret door slams shut.
INT. THE VIVARIUM - CONTINUOUS
Zach stumbles onto the metal grating floor. He gasps for air.
DR. JULIAN ERICKSON stands over him, looking annoyed. He holds a tablet.
ERICKSON
> You’re late. And your heart rate is spiking to 160. Try to breathe, Mr. Dawson. Hyperventilation kills brain cells.
Zach scrambles up, looking around. The lab is illuminated by the eerie glow of the monitors.
ZACH
> That thing! Upstairs! It... it absorbed the maintenance guy!
ERICKSON
> Mulchor. A Drone class. Crude, but effective.
Erickson walks calmly to the main console. He types a command. The massive screen shifts to a schematic breakdown of the Monster.
ZACH
> How are you so calm? We need to call the police! The National Guard!
ERICKSON
> They can’t help. Conventional weapons won’t kill it. If you blow it up, the spores disperse and infect the entire zip code. It’s a hydra, Zach. Cut off one head, you get a plague.
ZACH
> Then what do we do?
Erickson turns. He points to the RED DECK BOX sitting on the center table.
ERICKSON
> We don’t do anything. You do.
Zach stares at the box.
ZACH
> No. No way. I’m a student. I study beetles, I don’t... I don’t fight monsters. Find someone else. Find a Marine.
ERICKSON
> The System is bio-locked to your DNA markers. I’ve been tracking your aptitude for months. You notice things others miss. You have the instincts of a survivor.
ZACH
> My "instincts" are telling me to run!
Suddenly, an ALARM blares.
COMPUTER VOICE
> Bio-Sign Detected. Upper Level. Target Acquired.
Erickson taps the screen. A security feed pops up.
It’s the GREENHOUSE.
Katie didn’t leave. She’s hiding behind a rack of potting soil, holding a shovel. The Mulch-Monster is stalking toward her, knocking over tables.
ERICKSON
> She didn’t run. She stayed to look for you.
Zach freezes. He watches the screen. The Monster is getting closer to Katie.
ZACH
(Quietly)
> Katie...
ERICKSON
> I can’t open the blast doors again, Zach. If that thing gets in here, the Mycelium takes the lab. Takes the city.
Zach looks at the screen. Then at Erickson. Then at the Box.
He walks over to the table. He grabs the SWARM BOX. It feels heavy in his hand.
ZACH
> Tell me how to kill it.
ERICKSON
> You don’t kill it. You capture it.
Erickson hits a button. The blast door hisses.
ERICKSON
> Go.
ACT THREE
INT. THE GREENHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Mulchor flips a heavy table aside. Katie screams, backing into the glass wall. She swings the shovel.
CLANG. It bounces harmlessly off the monster's fungal armor.
MULCHOR
> Resistance... is... futile.
Katie slams her eyes shut and covers her ears with her hands as Mulchor raises its claw to strike.
ZACH (O.S.)
> Hey! Compost-Breath!
The Monster turns.
Zach stands at the other end of the greenhouse. He looks terrified, but he’s standing his ground.
ZACH
> Pick on someone your own species.
Zach clips the SWARM BOX to his belt. He hits the EJECT button.
SWARM BOX
> MANTIS!
A RED CARD shoots up. Zach catches it. He feels the energy humming in his fingertips.
ZACH
> CALL THE SWARM!
Zach throws the card.
FX: The card halts in mid-air, expanding into a 7-foot RED HARD-LIGHT GATE. The digital Mantis roars.
Zach sprints. He lowers his shoulder and SMASHES through the hologram.
SLOW MOTION: As he passes through, red data streams wrap around his limbs. The Mesh Suit forms. The Chitin Armor snaps on. The Helmet seals with a HISS.
REAL TIME: The RED MANTIS RANGER rolls out the other side, landing in a crouch between Katie and the Monster.
Katie slowly opens her eyes and stares, wide-eyed.
KATIE
> Who...?
RED RANGER (ZACH)
(Voice filtered)
> Get back!
The Mulch-Monster roars and charges.
MULCHOR
> New... Biomass!
Zach panics. He throws a wild haymaker punch.
The Monster tanks it. It doesn’t even flinch. The Monster backhands Zach.
WHAM. Zach flies backward, crashing into a potting bench. Clay pots shatter everywhere.
INT. THE VIVARIUM - CONTINUOUS
Erickson watches on the monitor. He presses his comms earbud.
ERICKSON
> Stop brawling, Zach! It’s walking armor. You can’t overpower a tank.
INT. GREENHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Zach groans, getting to his feet.
RED RANGER (ZACH)
> Yeah? Well, it hits like a truck!
The Monster charges again.
ERICKSON (V.O.)
> You’re a Mantis. You don’t hunt. You wait. Find the opening.
Zach looks at the charging monster. He takes a breath. He remembers the lecture. Ambush predator.
He drops his hands. He stands perfectly still.
The Monster swings a massive haymaker.
At the last second—Zach SHIFTS.
He sidesteps the blow with blinding speed. He grabs the Monster’s extended arm, uses the momentum, and flips the beast over his shoulder.
CRASH. The Monster hits the floor hard.
RED RANGER (ZACH)
> Okay. That... that felt good.
Zach taps his Swarm Box. A new card pops up. WEAPON ICON.
RED RANGER (ZACH)
> Armament: Mantis Edges!
He throws the card. It shatters into pixels that reform in his hands as TWIN KAMAS.
RED RANGER (ZACH)
> Let’s trim the hedges.
Zach charges. This time, it’s a dance. He slides under the Monster’s arm-cannon, slashing the hydraulics. SPARKS. He spins, slicing the back of its knees. SPARKS.
The Monster falls to one knee, groaning. Its purple glow flickers and fades.
MULCHOR
> System... failing...
INT. THE VIVARIUM - CONTINUOUS
ERICKSON
> It’s critical. End it, Zach. Use the Blank.
INT. GREENHOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Zach draws a WHITE CARD (Containment Card).
RED RANGER (ZACH)
> Specimen... Captured!
He throws the card.
FX: The card expands into a digital PYRAMID FIELD around the Monster. The Monster roars as it breaks apart into red data streams. The streams are sucked into the card.
The card snaps shut, turns COLOR (showing a picture of the monster), and flies back to Zach’s hand.
Silence returns to the Greenhouse.
Zach stands there, chest heaving. He looks at the card in his hand. Then he looks at Katie.
She is still huddled in the corner, staring at him with awe.
KATIE
> You... you saved me.
Zach wants to say something. He takes a step toward her.
But sirens wail in the distance. Campus Security is coming.
He fires a grapple line from his wrist, zipping up toward the ventilation skylight.
He vanishes into the night, leaving Katie alone in the ruins of the plants.
FADE OUT.
(END OF EPISODE ONE)

Author’s Note 📝:
Hello everyone! I am incredibly excited to finally start sharing this project with you all. For those who might not know me from other communities, I've been writing serialized fanfiction and original scripts for quite a while now. I write exclusively in a traditional screenplay format, from my Destiny AU to Pokémon. Now, I'm bringing that same episodic, fast-paced script energy to the Morphin Grid. I’m not exactly sure if r/Tokusatsu is the proper place to post this but I hope you all will accept me!
I want to explicitly address the elephant in the room: Yes, this is an insect-themed Ranger team. However, this story has absolutely nothing to do with Ohsama Sentai King-Ohger. Bio-Strike is a completely original concept with its own unique lore, mechanics, suits, and characters built entirely from the ground up.
Thanks for reading,
