While he isn’t the main focus of the fic Ash Ketchum is a reoccurring character in it, often bothering my MC. If there was a case they were both on is there anything that would make Ash freeze at?
For starters, I think it would be useful to establish a general picture of the story. And for that matter, I think pillars, inspirations, and comparison are a great tool for that so I don't drop a huge lore bomb.

Now, to the question in the title: which legendary, or legendaries, should I include in this story?
I know that legendaries aren't a must in a Pokémon story, but I can't deny how useful they can be for creating some sort of McGuffin or goal that brings the conflict out of the realm of conceptual questions and into a physical experience.
That's exactly what I've struggled with the most in my fic: giving the villains (something like a Team Galactic, Team Rocket hybrid) a tangible goal that doesn't just raise questions about the story's themes, but also gives these superpowered animals a reason to fight. That's how I came to the conclusion that my story needs at least one legendary. The thing is, which one?
I want to avoid the obvious answers. For many reasons, and not necessarily because I want to be unique. It would be as easy as saying, "your story is inspired by X, so pick X legendary". But I want something that fits the story I'm writing, its themes, and its particular ideas. My candidates are:

So maybe those little guys who could be considered a single entity, who make every living being yearn for knowledge, emotion, and will (this is also a story about those things), would be a good choice. Also, the first trilogy will eventually build up to Dialga, Palkia, Arceus, and probably Giratina. The Lake Trio could be a great way to foreshadow "the forces beyond our understanding".

I've read in some fics now the idea of specialised diets, adding nutrients or foregoing pokechow all together for custom meals at certain points. But how do you deal with making those diets and outlier pokemon like rock types?
I've currently been plodding at the idea of a Toxicologist trainer as a concept with a Glimmet as a starter. But Glimmet doesnt have a mouth and absorbs minerals directly from cave systems. So what minerals and compounds would be its staple? Both Area Zero and Oni Mountain are too far from the coast for limestone would the pokemon need more carbon based compounds like say a Carbink would or Silicon like a Sableye eating gems? How would different mineral toxins affect Glimmets toxic crystals.
My mind is jumping about with rough High-school chemistry knowledge trying to logic a diet. How do other writers do this? How do you write pokemon diets?
Gonna write a story based on my current Nuzlocke. For my story, the Nuzlocke rules are only for the MC (and maybe a few other incredibly unfortunate people) and is akin to a curse. Some legendary hates these guys and does not want them getting a pokemon team/power, but for my made up lore legendaries aren’t allowed to straight up kill mortals unprovoked, so they have to settle for cursing them. This also helps explain why legendaries aren’t interfering in evil schemes despite me making (some of) them fully intelligent beings and not indifferent arseholes.
I really wanted to avoid making it a rule for every trainer, because then it just wouldn’t make logistical sense for rivals, gym leaders, team bosses etc. have the same team for every battle. I could change their teams for each battle, yes, but that is a massive pain and I’d rather stick closer to the battles that actually happen in my run. Also then Pokémon society would be so, so much crueler than in canon…which can work for some stories, but not mine.
‘I’m curious how other writers might tackle this. I’ve pretty much made up my mind on this but I still want to hear other ideas out of curiosity.
I recently wrote and posted a oneshot for a rarepair (my first ever fic on AO3, and only the second fic with that ship!). It’s niche enough that it probably won’t get many readers, but I have a much better appreciation for all the work that goes into writing now, hahahaha.
I’ve always enjoyed the more speculative nature of rarepairs and the potential there (though do understand that ships with a lot of canon interactions or “evidence” could technically still be rarepairs). I tend to gravitate towards them, since it feels like there’s a lot more freedom and flexibility, rather than ships where fandom has a very firm collective idea of how it should be.
Anyway, I’d love to know what your rarepairs are and why you like them. “Rarepair” is pretty subjective, but I would say use your best judgement. If you’ve written for a rarepair or have any fic recs for a rarepair you like, I’d love to read them :)
The backstory of the side characters create an impact on any story and helps us understand the depth of the their behaviour. What happened to them in the past, and Why did they want to support the protagonist of the story? Now any side character in the Pokemon series or fanfic can have a normal backstory. It was as if they had lost a competition and decided they would never lose again Or they support the main character to fulfill their a dream.
But in some stories, backstory is filled with trauma and bad memories of being attacked by wild Pokémon, which caused them to develop a fear And throughout the journey, they learned to overcome that trauma. Or maybe Some organization may have done something or they may have lost someone close to them etc.
Then there could be some story that can be considered dark or psychologically disturbed. Where something happened to the character that left them completely traumatized and they couldn't remember anything because it was so dark that they even didn't went to that past again.
There can be many such examples which can make the story interesting and can teach the main character about other side of the world. Can you share the backstory of some of your side characters?

Hey, I'm writing a journey-fic right now and I've been thinking about what moves are 'acceptable' for a pokemon to learn. I generally find their in-game movepool to be a good starting point, but quite a few species are lacking in that department.
Take Flareon for example, which is one of the pokemon I'd like to eventually have on the MC's team.
They essentially only learn Fire Type moves and a couple of random things like Shadow Ball and Iron Tail by TM. I won't name all of them, but there's also some random ones like Zap Cannon in Generation 2 iirc.
Now, I don't have an issue with Flareon focusing more on their specific type in my story, I actually like the idea that Eeveelutions have a limited movepool. It just means that they'll be better at using their fire compared to most other Fire Types around their skill level. But, at the same time, there are some coverage moves that I'd like to add, even if they're not 'game legal'.
Not that game legal always makes sense lol.
It's all within reason, of course. I'm not going to say that a Flareon could learn Hydro Pump, Thunderbolt, or Psychic, but if they can learn Scorching Sands and Dig...then why not Earthquake? Would it be as strong as a Tyranitar using Earthquake? Definitely not, but I don't think it's unreasonable after considering exactly how many pokemon can use that move.
Some of the moves I'm thinking of using are: Solar Beam, Earthquake, Iron Head, [Elemental Fangs]...
So, I'm wondering if anyone who's had this problem before would mind giving me some advice? Or even just what people think of authors doing this kind of thing? My story doesn't respect the game or anime 'universes' to the letter, but I still like to draw inspiration from both.

I'm pretty new to the fanfiction side of the Pokémon fandom. So far, I haven't really read any for myself (which is something I should probably do, I'll take recs), though I have been writing a "bible" for my own fanfiction that's going to be three parts long. The first part is going to be centered around learning about the MC and how he handles his first Pokémon journey, with the setting of the part being in Sinnoh. Generally a shonen-esque part with a side of lore. Though, because I haven't read anything, how do I go about writing out the way that the Pokémon league is done?
Is it 1 to 1 with the games? Is it similar to how the anime and/or Galar does their leagues? Or is there a completely different way its done?

So there's the whole genre of fics where portals (or dungeons/towers, for a more contained invasion) suddenly appeared around the world one day and soon humanity was overwhelmed with beast tides and monsters, etc.
Humanity falls back to walled/fortress cities and things look grim, but then humanity gains powers and/or learns to tame the beasts and they begin to fight back and adapt to the new state of the world.
So take all of that, but give it the pokemon spin.
The "powers" people gain could be aura users/psychics/hex maniacs, as well as humanity just in general becoming stronger/sturdier as time/generations go by (as per the ridiculous fears ash and others do in the anime/comics when paired with the lore for Pokémon weights/etc, and surviving).
The "monsters" are Pokémon, so of course there will be those that will form bonds with humanity/help them fight back against others.
There are Swarms/migrations/etc in the games, so those (combined with them still adapting to/moving into Earth) could be beast tides.
Various final evolutions and/or psuedo legendary species' territories become "Forbidden zones". Not to mention actual Legendaries and how humanity would react to them/how the Legendaries would react to (Earth) Humans/modern weapons. (Only take the first nuke before one of them would remove them from the world or something)
(Also, whether or not the world the Pokémon are coming from has its own humans or if these ones have never before met humanity, both could be interesting)

I just feel like the protagonist working together would be cool, like maybe they’ve heard of rainbow rocket and have followed them through the dimensions to stop them.(I know rainbow rocket villain leaders are from universes where they won either because the Protags lost or didn’t exist, but I dunno maybe the protags are from ANOTHER universe and heard about it from the legendaries they helped rescue).

A normal story… I guess. A girl is starting her Pokemon journey however it’s not normal, the world is wrong, and her dad Is gone, and she wants to find him, if not that just to know what happened. See not knowing things always bugged her, deeply, she never liked not knowing and never understood why she couldn’t get an answer, it wouldn’t hurt anything…right? “I wanna know,” Nora thought, “I really want to know.” Her father’s been gone for a while, maybe 3 months, “what happened, why can’t I know” Nora asked her mother. “You can’t handle it you’re a child,” her mother responded. “You always use that response and you can’t use it forever, I’ll find the answer it’s only a matter of time,” she talked into the phone at the Poke-center “you can’t stop me.” Right as soon as her mother opened her mouth to scold her she hung up. “It’s tiring ever just talking to her, I can’t anymore, with her… for a time.” “We’ve had this conversation so many times before, I just don’t know why I simply can’t know what happened” she said quietly in the poke-center “it never occurred to me that I can’t know VERY important things because I’m not as old as her.” “Nora Hart your Pokemon are fully healthy.” “Oh yes,” Nora said “thank you very much.” “Come back again!” The whole “come back” thing Nurse Joy’s always did really bothered her, like you want my Pokemon to get injured or something!? Anyways now that Zo (Zorua) is alright now we’re out. Anyways she is hungry, she hasn’t ate since yesterday, and its 1:00 pm. There’s a diner in town seems nice, anyways she isn’t complaining. She opens the doors and immediately accidentally hits someone with it, “OW” the person said. “SORRY SORRY MY BAD SORRY.” The person sighed deeply, as Nora slowly backed away. And that’s when she realized the place is PACKED. She looks back to start to get out of the building but there are already AT LEAST 5 people who replaced her spot as soon as she moved. She sighed and sat down and notices something. “Why are people sitting next to each other not talking?” She thought and the answer immediately came to her mind “people have to sit to strangers to be able to sit!” She found the one seat in the entire building that isn’t completely filled but the problem is… it’s completely empty, meaning that it’s open to anybody wanting to sit down. After hesitating for about a quarter of a second she realizes “it’s either I claim the seat right now or I don’t sit down,” so she sat down. As the waiter is coming over to her (took about an hour) a person hurries over to that seat across from her and… it’s the person she hit in the head. Nora let Jay have and is waiting for the waiter, so she wondered “if your waiting for the waiter are you now the waiter.” Anyways the waiter comes back distraught and says “…sorry I forgot the straw.” “Nah you’re fine” said Nora. “Straw acquired” Nora announced. The waiter gets back to them and takes their order for food. Apparently this place has a little gimmick. They give you a big styrofoam box full of different toppings that you can put on your burger! Anyways it got the job done, tasty. Nora finally got to leave, she said goodbye to Jay and walked out the building. She walks outside and on a random route, she’s not sure where, and she doesn’t really care. Zo is trailing behind her and suddenly isn’t. What is Zo looking at? She walks over to where Zo is standing and… it’s looking at nothing, she double checks and looks through the trees a little but nothing’s there, nothing living anyway. She looks back at Zo… still looking. That’s when she finally picked up Zo but even when she’s moving away Zo’s still looking at the same spot, eyes completely dead, staring. When Nora turns a corner Zo… jumps out of her arms and goes back to looking at it. Nora finally decides to put Zo in the ball and starts walking away. That seemed to put an end to it, and when she finally took Zo out at the poke center to rest, Zo was fine. “Does he even have a recollection of it?” She thought. She went to sleep for the night and had a dream, and… “what is that.” A dark shadow loomed over her. As she looked up she saw it a large creature. It seemed to have a red scarf on it with a white head and a dark body. It glared at her from the moment she looked up, it wasn’t THAT big.
I've just posted the first chapter of Against Adversity - an OC trainer long journeyfic with a full OC cast at the center of the story. It takes place in a reimagined Paldea that's been reworked to fit a more traditional Pokemon Journey structure.

The major focus of the fic is our main character, Zinnia Drayce, fighting the uphill battle to become the greatest trainer in her year's League circuit (called the Trials in this story) to take up the mantle of champion and fill the space left behind by the previous champion's unexpected disappearance several years prior. This is not meant to be a SI or power fantasy, and our main character will be facing many hardships (though hopefully not to the point that it feels like suffering simulator), thus the title Against Adversity.
For those who enjoy this sort of thing, the story also contains a slow burn yuri romance plot, which I hope I've nailed the middleground of being compelling and interesting without overshadowing the Pokemon Journey core. The fic has been marked mature due to containing more mature/adult content matter such as heavy emotional subjects planned for the story, violence, and non-explicit but still adult romantic content.
The first 110k words (all of arc 1) have been pre-written, and the story will be updating regularly as I work through my backlog. I'll be working on arc 2 while this posts, so I anticipate the release schedule to generally function as somewhat seasonal, with fast chapter releases followed by brief brakes to refill the backlog.
