A Costco box grail

A month or so ago -- before they sold out at my local store -- I went to Costco every day for a week to get these boxes. Also ordered an A&G x hobby because it's my favorite. The plan was to open them all on my birthday and do a post showing everything and try to get some trades going. (And obviously we have still done that and would love to make deals with anyone interested.)

But man. We were about halfway through opening them together when I hear my 12 year old yell "Daddy!" I look up, see the Heavy Lumber back and gasp excitedly bc we'd never pulled one before. And then he turns it over. And it's David Wright.

I'm in my 40s now, so as a Mets fan, my best childhood baseball memories are of Edgardo Alfonzo and Mike Piazza and Benny Agbayani and Todd Pratt. And through college and my 20s -- the years when I went from wide-eyed kid to true Mets diehard (with all that comes with it) -- it was Jose Reyes and David Wright.

They came up together, and they were SO MUCH FUN. Peter Gammons said the most exciting moment in baseball was when Jose Reyes would hit a ball into the RCF gap. And David Wright just seemed to do everything right all the time. Soon he was The Face of MLB. Captain America. But while they mostly won together, they never managed to capture a pennant... and eventually Jose moved on and David's back fell apart and the briefly-great Mets of the late 2000s were finished.

With David, we were lucky enough to get one more moment of magic. A wunderkind pitching staff all came of age at once -- and the pennant race that ensued that summer and fall happened to coincide with one of the increasingly rare stretches of months that his spinal stenosis allowed him to play. And of course, he would homer in the only game the Mets would win in the 2015 World Series.

So while we've only been collecting now for a year, I always figured I'd one day buy or trade for a nice Wright auto to be one of the keystones of my PC. I never dreamed we'd be the ones who actually pulled it -- and I'll always remember the way my son's voice sounded ("Daddy!") when he saw it. We will have that memory forever, because the card will never let us forget.

This, to me, is what the hobby is all about. And my wish is that every collector on here someday gets that same type of moment.

Cheers.

P.S. A nice r/baseballcards-aided story coda: While David Wright doesn't mean the same thing to my son as he does to me -- we recently agreed to trade the Ohtani /2026 pictured here (which also came out of the Costco stacks) to someone we found on this subreddit. In exchange, we're getting an auto of my son's favorite player, Pete Alonso :)

P.P.S. Got any Reyes autos you'd trade me?

(TL;DR: Ripped a bunch on my birthday, got a personal grail, everything pictured is available for sale or trade except the Wright and the Ohtani /2026.)
