Gift for a 4 year old that won’t annoy the parents?

My niece is turning 4 and I’m trying to find something she’ll actually use instead of something that gets forgotten after a few days.

I don’t want to do clothes because everyone buys clothes, and I’m avoiding anything loud or battery-powered because I actually like my sister. Budget is around $100, but I’d rather spend less if the cheaper option ends up being the better gift.

I’ve been looking at a few things and can’t decide.

A soft busy cube seems interesting, but I’m not sure if a 4-year-old would still get much use out of the buttons, zippers, and other activities.

I also looked at water play mats. They seem fun, but I’ve seen some parents say their kid lost interest pretty quickly and then it just took up space.

Another thing I came across was the magnetic wall play decals. They seem different from the usual toys, but I can’t tell whether they’re a good fit for a 4-year-old or something kids appreciate more when they’re a little older.

I’m probably overthinking this. If you’ve bought any of these, which ones actually got used more than a few times?

I didn’t realize my own phone habits were setting the tone

I had one of those annoying parenting realizations this week.

I kept getting frustrated that my 3 year old was asking for the tablet so much, especially during the boring parts of the day. Waiting for dinner, sitting in the living room, riding in the car, that kind of thing.

Then I caught myself checking my phone during every tiny pause. Waiting for water to boil, phone. Sitting on the couch for 2 minutes, phone. She starts playing independently for once, phone.

So of course she thinks screens are what you reach for the second nothing is happening.

I’m not saying I’m going phone-free or anything dramatic. I still need my phone, and sometimes I genuinely need a break. But I’ve started trying to put it down during those little in-between moments and do something boring with my hands instead. Fold laundry, wipe the counter, sit with coffee, move blocks around with her for 5 minutes.

It’s uncomfortable how often I reach for it without even thinking.

No big lesson here. Just one of those moments where I realized I was annoyed at a habit I was also modeling all day.
